Three Sign National Letters of Intent to Join Cavalier Men
Clarke, Cobb and Pirtle will enroll this fall
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia director of track and field/cross country
Bryan Fetzer announced Wednesday (May 16) that Scott Clarke (Devonshire, Bermuda), Alston Cobb (Chesapeake, Va.) and John Michael Pirtle (Mt. Jackson, Va.) have signed national letters of intent (NLI) to join the Cavalier
program this fall.
Clarke, who will run the 100 and 200 meters, will be competing for Bermuda at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Clarke also competed for his home nation in the 2011 World Youth Championships in France and the World
Youth Commonwealth Games in Isle of Man.
Cobb, who will compete in the heptathlon and decathlon, finished eighth in the decathlon at the 2011 New Balance Outdoor National Championships and 12th in the pentathlon at the 2012 New Balance Indoor Nationals. He earned all-region honors
in the triple and long jumps during the 2012 indoor season.
Pirtle, who will also compete in the multiÂ’s, placed second in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2011 Virginia State Championships. He won his district in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and placed third in the discus, fourth in the shot put
and sixth in the long jump. John Michael is the son of Willy Pirtle, who holds the second-best decathlon mark in school history.
Clarke, Cobb and Pirtle join
Mike Marsella (Wood River Junction, R.I.),
Connor Rog (Fairfield, Conn.) and Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.), who signed NLIs earlier in the spring to join the menÂ’s program.
