JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Indiana track and field got two athletes through to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on day one at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Sophomore Kyla Buckley advanced in the shot put and Zach Mayhew advanced in the 10,000m, it is the first NCAA berth for both Hoosiers. IU also saw three runners advance to quarterfinals later this weekend on day one.

Buckley took 11th in the shot put to advance to the NCAA finals in Des Moines, launching a heave of 15.84m (51-11.75). The sophomore from Indianapolis had her best mark on her third throw, getting into the finals, and the mark held up to allow her to advance to her first NCAA meet. Buckley becomes IndianaÂ’s fifth outdoor qualifier in the womenÂ’s shot put in four years, and sheÂ’ll look to become IUÂ’s fourth All-American in that span.

Danny Stockberger took eighth in the same heat, but missed out on advancing on time by just one tenth of a second. Kelsey Duerksen advanced to the quarters in the womenÂ’s 1,500m. Her time was the 10th fastest of the 24 qualifiers, and she finished seventh in her heat.
