The men’s 1500m final was a finish for the record books as Myles Batty, the Indoor collegiate mile record holder and Andrew Bayer of Indiana fought all the way up to the last second of the 1500, where the winner was determined by both athletes diving across the line.  The majority of the race was very tactical with German Fernandez of Oklahoma State leading until the bell lap where the race became a battle between Batty and Bayer.  Batty made a strong move with 300 meters to go but Bayer would not let up and fought for every step until the finish line with a 3:43.82 as Batty came in a ridiculously close 2nd place with a 3:43.83

The women’s 1500m final began as a very tactical race as many finals tend to be.  Amanda Winslow from Florida State took the lead early and led the field to a 69 first lap.  There was a good amount of jostling as the pack came into the 800 meter mark in 2:21, still a very tactical race for the field.  As the pack began to move ahead into the bell lap, Winslow attempted to surge and put three steps on the rest of the pack, but a group of Katie Flood of Washington, Jordan Hasay of Oregon, and Emily Infeld of Georgetown chased her down in the final 150 meters.  The last 100 meters was all drive as Hasay, Flood, and Infeld fought for every step to the finish line.  Flood’s kick proved to stand out as the Washington sophomore came out with the win in 4:13:79, winning her first individual NCAA title in her hometown of Des Moines.

The men’s steeplechase final began as a very tactical race with Ben Johnson of Stanford leading and Don Cabral of Princeton trialing with the rest of the pack behind them. Henry Lelei of Texas A&M, the Big 12 Champion made a strong move as Cabral followed.  With a little over two laps to go, Cabral made a move to the front with Lelei on his back.  As the two headed into the last lap, Lelei just couldn’t hold his position as Cabral made a huge surge with 200 meters to go.  In 2nd place heading into the final 50 meters, Lelei caught the last hurdle with his trail leg and fell, allowing Craig Forys of Michigan and Cory Leslie of Ohio State to catch him for 2nd and 3rd place.

The women’s 5,000m played out to be a very tactical race, especially with the intense heat on the track as Natosha Rogers of Texas A&M, the winner of the 10k led the pack into a 5:45 first mile. As the race progressed, Jessica Tebo of Colorado took the lead and picked up the place slightly. In the final 600 meters of the race, the lead pack was Megan Goethals of Washington, Jessica Tebo of Colorado, and Abby D’Agostino of Dartmouth.  D’Agostino made a hard move with 300 meters to go and Goethals wouldn’t let her go, but with 100 meters left, D’Agostino held off Goethals with yet another close finish for the win.  D’Agostino’s last stride just put the sophomore ahead of Goethals with a 16:11.34 to win the women’s 5k.

The men’s 1600m relay is one of the most exciting races in track and field and this final proved just how exciting this event can be.  It ended up coming down to a showdown between the USC Trojans and the Florida Gators as the two teams battled for every step.  It came down to Bryshon Nellum of USC and Tony McQuay of Florida to determine the title.  Nellum held off McQuay until about 200 meters to go when McQuay made a hard move to pass Nellum on the inside of the turn.  McQuay brought the title home for the Gators in a 3:00.02, which solidified Florida’s first NCAA team title in school history.

The women’s 1600m relay was just as exciting as the men’s 4x4 as the fastest women from all over the country faced off to end the meet and declare the winner of the team title.  The Oregon Ducks faced off against the LSU Tigers for the majority of the race with LSU leading until the final lap.  Phyllis Francis of Oregon tracked down Jonique Day from LSU to claim the win for the Ducks with a time of 3:24.54, another great photo finish to end this great meet.
