Current, Future Cavaliers Head to USATF Junior Outdoor Championships

Meet runs Friday through Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia track and field team has four freshmen competing at the 2012 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind., on Friday through Sunday (June 15-17).

Live results will be available and linked through VirginiaSports.com. The junior classification is limited to individuals over the age of 14 and those who will not become 20 years of age during the year of competition (2012).

Freshmen Devin Brewer (Dumfries, Va.), Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.), Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) and Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.), along with incoming first-year Payton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) will all compete for spots on Team USA for the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain, on July 10-15.

Brewer will compete in the first round of menÂ’s 400 hurdles on Friday at 5:40 p.m. His best time of 52.52 came on April 28 at the Highlander Invitational in Roanoke, Va., on April 28. He holds the fourth-fastest freshman time in Virginia history. The final will be at 6:10 p.m. on Saturday.

King was the nationÂ’s second-fastest freshman in the menÂ’s 5,000 meters with a time of 13:55.60, set at the Colonial Relays on April 6. That time is the Virginia freshman record and the fourth-fastest time in school history. He will compete in the 5,000m final at 7:50 p.m. on Friday night.

“Going into this weekend, I’m excited and dying to represent the USA at the World Junior Championships,” King said. “I feel my chances are pretty good based off my recent training. I was pretty angry with my performance after not making NCAAs, but threw together a few good workout sessions and feel sharp and ready.”

Lavender broke the UVa freshman record in the womenÂ’s 400 meters in a time of 53.44 at the ACC Championships at Lannigan Field on April 21. That time ranks fourth fastest in school history. She will compete in the first round on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. The final is Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

“I’m looking forward to running against some great competition, and I hope all the training I’ve done pays off,” Lavender said.

Satchell finished his first NCAA campaign with the seventh-best mark in the men’s triple jump in school history and third-best freshman mark with a leap of 15.25m (50’ 0.5”) at the Virginia Challenge on May 12. The men’s triple jump competition is Saturday at 6:10 p.m.

Chaney, who signed an NLI in March to join the Cavaliers in the fall, will compete in the both the womenÂ’s 100 and 200 meters. Chaney finished second in the 100m and 200m for Nerinx Hall High School at the 2012 Missouri State High School Championships in May. The 100m first round and finals are both on Friday, at 3:15 and 6:40 p.m., respectively. The 200m first round is Saturday at 6:40 p.m., while the final is Sunday at 3:55 p.m.

Next up, the Cavaliers will send a few student-athletes to the US Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on June 22 to July 1.
