RECAP: Day 0 of 2012 Olympic Trials
The invasion began today with the hammer throw. The first representatives of the United States were crowned this afternoon at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, OR as the men's and women's hammer throw kicked off the 2012 US Olympic Trials. The results of today's competition were insane as meet records were broken and personal bests were shattered left and right. As Jesse Squire mentioned in the Olympic Trials Hammer Time Preview, for the athletes that already hit the Olympic A standard prior to the Trials, another athlete would have to both beat them and hit that distance for them to not make the team.
Starting with the women's hammer throw, the athletes to watch going into the competition were the three women who had already hit the Olympic A standard prior to the meet. Jessica Cosby (American record holder and four-time US champion), Amber Campbell (2010 US Champion), and Gwen Berry all broke the magical mark of 71.50. The meet started with a dramatic statement by Cosby who broke the meet record by throwing a 70.72, but Amanda Bingson, a young college kid from UNLV stole her spotlight after an incredible throw of 71.22, a huge PR for the UNLV senior. After a disappointing third place finish at NCAA's two weeks ago, it was redemption time for Bingson. Later on, Bingson would throw another personal best and hit the Olympic A standard with a throw of 71.78 to secure her spot in the top three. Campbell wouldn't give it to her though and came back with a PR of 71.80 and a new meet record, moving from 5th to first place. The top three heading to London will be Amber Campbell, Amanda Bingson, and Jessica Cosby.

The men's hammer throw proved to be a bit more predictable as A.G. Kruger and Kibwe
Johnson, the only athletes who had already hit the Olympic A standard going into the meet, finished in the top three. The meet started with Kibwe Johnson establishing the lead early with a throw of 74.40, which was followed by Chris Cralle (unattached) and Johnson's teammate A.G. Kruger who's longest throw was a 73.55. Both Johnson and Kruger will be the only athletes to represent the US in London because Cralle's throw hit the Olympic B standard but not the A standard.
