The women's 800 meter final proved to be a very exciting race as Alysia Montano, three-time US Champion, took the race out in a blazing 55 seconds for the first 400 meters. She was followed by the rest of the field, which was about thirty meters behind her going into the bell lap. It was a frantic race for the 2nd and 3rd place positions. Gina Hall made a big move in the last 50 meters to edge out Alice Schmidt for 2nd place. Saucony's Molly Beckwith was in 2nd place going into the home stretch, but had to settle for 4th place as Hall and Schmidt had a little extra gas in the tank. The race concluded with the US Olympic team being represented by Montano, Hall, and Schmidt.

Pre-race Talk:

The Flo Favorites

1. Montano
Alysia was in a league of her own in 2011 and now in 2012. She is not afraid to get out hard and put a gap on the rest of the field. Right now Montano ranks #2 in the world. Will anyone go with her today or will it just be a battle for second and third?

2. Beckwith
Molly Beckwith is coming into her own as an 800 runner after coming from a soccer background a few years ago at Indiana. Beckwith, ranked #2 in the US, is coming off a near PR run in NYC. Beckwith looked smoother than just about everyone in her semi-final and we don't see that changing much.

3. Gall
Gall has had a very consistent season winning the Oxy meet and finishing second to Montano at the Pre Classic with a PR. Gall also beat Beckwith head-to-head at Pre. Don't forget she'll be on home turf at Hayward!

Our next to have a shot....look for Alice Schmidt, 2008 Olympian to have experience and come through over the final 100 meters. Also Maggie Vessey has been looking promising and seems to be more dialed in than we've seen in the past. She has not talked to any media as she prepares to chase her first Olympic Team. Remember, she is the only woman to be on the last two World Championship teams.
