Theisen Eases Into Second at Canadian Trials

Sets two huge PRs on day one of the heptathlon.

CALGARY, Alberta – Brianne Theisen set a pair of personal bests Wednesday to stand second in the heptathlon competition at the Canadian Olympic Trials at Foothills Athletic Park.

Canadian national record-holder Jessica Zelinka had the first day lead with 3,982 points, followed by Theisen with 3,838, Jennifer Cotten (3,361) and Rachel McIntosh (3,199). Theisen needs a top-three finish to secure a trip to the London Olympics.

Despite taking only one throw in the shot put and stopping after five attempts in the high jump, Theisen is ahead of her own personal-best pace she set earlier this month in winning her third NCAA title.

The senior from Humboldt, Sask., opened the competition with a big personal-best in the 100 meter hurdles, 13.09, to finish second in the event.

She had five straight first attempt clearances in the high jump – 5-7.25, 5-8.5, 5-9.75, 5-10.75 and 6-0/1.83m – before calling it a day. Her last clearance, which won the high jump, was just one centimeter shy of her heptathlon best.

She then went to the shot put, where it took just one throw for another huge personal best, 43-4.25/13.21m, and passed on her final two throws. That mark was an improvement of nearly a foot over her previous best of 42-4.75.

Theisen wrapped up day one by running 24.11 in the 200 meters, second only to Zelinka’s 23.42.

Her first day score is 35 points better than the 3,803 points she scored on the first day of the heptathlon at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
