MONACO, France - Derek DrouinÂ’s final Olympic preparations in Europe started out well with a win at the Aviva London Grand Prix, and he added to that with a third place finish in the high jump at the Herculis Monaco Diamond League meet, scoring a point in the biggest organized league in the sport of track and field. IU alum Molly Beckwith took fourth in the 800 meters at the meet.
Drouin cleared 2.30m (7-6.5) for third, beating two of three Olympians for team USA, including recent NCAA Champion Erik Kynard. He finished behind only reigning IAAF World Champion Jesse Williams of the U.S. and reigning European Champion Robbie Grabarz of Great Britain. With the top three scoring points in the Diamond League race, Drouin scored one point, the first of his career. The IU junior cleared 7-1.5, 7-3.25, 7-5 and 7-6.5 without a single miss. He then narrowly missed his third and final attempt at 2.33m (7-7.75), which was the winning height. His clearance of 7-6.5 marks his second-best clearance this season, as he has cleared 2.31m (7-7) three times. With his one point, he is tied for fifth in the Diamond League standings.
Beckwith clocked a time of 1:59.37 for fourth, narrowly missing out on a Diamond League point of her own. Beckwith has two points in the Diamond League race this season and is tied for fourth in the standings. Beckwith finished just .32 behind U.S. Olympic Trials Champion Alysia Montano, who was third. BeckwithÂ’s performance is her ninth time under 2:01 in 2012, a feat she has accomplished in eight-straight races. The time is her fourth under two minutes this season and she has broken the two-minute barrier six times in her career.
