Razorbacks named Indoor Scholar Team of the Year
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s track and field team has been tabbed the Scholar Team of the Year for the 2012 indoor season, as announced Thursday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Additionally, the Razorbacks had 12 student-athletes earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their individual successes in the classroom.
Arkansas was named Indoor Scholar Team of the Year as a result of being the highest-placing team with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average at the most recent
NCAA indoor and outdoor meets. The Razorbacks hold a team GPA of 3.183 and finished fifth at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships in March. Previously recognized in 2002, this is Arkansas’ second Scholar Team of the Year selection from the USTFCCCA.
The team’s list of individual honorees consists of Martine Borge, Tara Diebold, Kaitlin Flattmann, Kristen Gillespie, Kirsten Hessletine, Grace Heymsfield, Shannon Klenke,
Danielle Nowell, Dominique Scott, Tina Sutej, Rachel Werner and Keri Wood.
Borge (3.560, business) finished fourth at 800 meters at the SEC Indoor Championships and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the event. Diebold (4.000, communication
disorders) was the runner-up in the pole vault at the SEC indoor meet with a personal-best clearance of 4.37m/14-4. Flattmann (4.000, biology) finished third at 10,000 meters at the outdoor conference meet and was a 5,000-meter qualifier for the NCAA West
Preliminary.
Gillespie (3.474, food, human nutrition and hospitality) was the SEC indoor champion in the mile and 3,000 meters, and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships at
1,500 meters. Hesseltine (3.688, childhood education) set a personal best with a clearance of 1.76m/5-9.25 at the NCAA West Preliminary. Heymsfield (3.704, food, human nutrition and hospitality) was the SEC runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Klenke (3.903, international business) qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:31.23. Nowell (3.787, kinesiology)
finished eighth in the pole vault at the SEC Outdoor Championships and went on to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary. Scott (3.370, marketing), the SEC Freshman Runner of the Year, was the runner-up at 10,000 meters and third-place runner at 5,000 meters
during the SEC outdoor meet.
Sutej (3.370, biology) was the NCAA and SEC indoor champion in the pole vault, improving upon her own collegiate record with a clearance of 4.55m/14-11 at the conference
meet. Werner (3.874, kinesiology) was a member of Arkansas’ runner-up distance-medley relay at the SEC Indoor Championships. Wood (4.000, marketing) finished in sixth place at 1,500 meters during the SEC Outdoor Championships with a personal-best time of 4:18.84.
Arkansas is one of eight teams in the Southeastern Conference to earn All-Academic team recognition. The Razorbacks’ 12 individual academic selections lead all SEC teams.
Overall, the SEC had 55 individuals receive All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA. In June, Diebold and Sutej were named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met either of the
established athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by
TFRRS.com. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships, including preliminary rounds.
A total of 676 student-athletes and 171 teams earned academic honors from the USTFCCCA. For more information regarding Razorback track and field or University of Arkansas athletics,
