Lannigan Field Re-Opens for Public Use
The addition of a perimeter loop creates a new exercise option
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. â€Â" Lannigan Field, the renovated Virginia track and field facility, will re-open for use by the general public on Wednesday, Aug. 1. In addition to the eight-lane track, the community will have access to a new soft surface loop around the facility’s perimeter.
“The renovations to Lannigan Field were important for our track and field programs as they strive to reach their goals for success,” Virginia Executive Associate Athletics Director Jon Oliver said.  Ã¢Â€ÂœCharlottesville is home to a vibrant running community and we are pleased to make this exceptional facility available to the public.  We appreciate the patience of everyone who used Lannigan Field in the past while we completed this renovation project.”
The new perimeter loop is a FieldTurf surface 573 yards long.  FieldTurf is a soft surface comprised of synthetic fibers, cryogenic rubber, and silica sand.
“The perimeter loop is an amazing addition to Lannigan Field,” Director of Cross Country / Track and Field Bryan Fetzer said.  Ã¢Â€ÂœIt will be used by every event group for a variety of purposes, including running, bounding, and drills.  To my knowledge, Virginia is the only programin the country that has a soft surface workout loop such as this.”
The track at Lannigan Field will be reserved for public access Mondays through Fridays from dawn to 10 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays the public may use the facility from dawn to 10 a.m. and from 2 p.m. until dusk.
The perimeter loop will be open for public use weekdays from dawn to 10 a.m., from noon to 2 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. Onweekends the perimeter loop will be open to the public from dawn to 10 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to dusk.
Lannigan Field will be reserved for varsity track and field practices Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The facility’s lights will remain on weekdays until 9 p.m. to accommodate public use on the perimeter loop.
Lannigan Field is used for a number of track and field events throughout the year for the University's teams as well as for local high school meets. Adjustments to track hours for events will be posted at the facility entrance.
The track will continue to be available for special events by appointment. Interested parties should contact the athletics department’s Facilities and Game Operations office by phone at 434-982-5022.
