LONDON, England - Derek Drouin extended his Olympic experience two more days, advancing through the qualifying round to TuesdayÂ’s finals in the menÂ’s high jump. A junior at Indiana, Drouin cleared 2.29m (7-6) to earn one of the 14 qualifying spots.
Drouin cleared four bars on the day, clearing 2.16 (7-1) on his first attempt. A pair of misses at 2.21m (7-3) provided a bit of pressure, but he was able to clear on his third attempt and recover well to clear 2.26m (7-5) on his second attempt. Having clinched a spot in the finals, Drouin went on to clear 2.29m (7-6) on his third attempt and qualify for the finals in sixth overall. Competition stopped at 2.29m with the field decided for the finals.
Drouin was the second-best qualifier from Group A, behind only Erik Kynard, the other collegiate in the field from Kansas State, who cleared 2.29m with fewer total misses. The goal of the day was to place among the top 12 and advance. A three-way tie for 12th put 14 into the Tuesday finals.
TuesdayÂ’s finals will begin at 2:00 p.m. ET, with all jumpers starting with a clean slate. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
