Campbell, Wallace sweep SEC honors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On the heels of their respective efforts at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational last weekend, Kemoy Campbell and Cale Wallace have garnered weekly awards from the Southeastern Conference. Campbell was named the SEC Runner of the Week, while Wallace collected SEC Freshman of the Week honors. The Razorbacks are also ranked No. 17 in this week’s USTFCCCA national poll.

“Coming in, we knew Kemoy was an exceptional athlete,” head coach Chris Bucknam said. “He showed his talent and I think it was just the tip of the iceberg for him. We’re really happy with his race. Cale Wallace, another newcomer for us, also did a good job. That’s a tough course to run your first collegiate 8K. I thought he did an outstanding job.”

Making his debut in the Razorback debut, Campbell pulled away late to win the individual title at the Virginia/Panorama Invitational in Earlysville, Va. He crossed the finish line in with an 8K time of 24:04.7, more than seven seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Campbell paced Arkansas to a second-place team finish and was the first of three top-five performers for the Razorbacks in the race.

In his first collegiate 8K, Wallace was fifth in the Razorbacks’ lineup in Virginia. He finished in 28th place overall with a time of 25:10.3. Wallace was third among freshmen in the race and was the only underclassmen to crack Arkansas’ top five.

Based on their performance last weekend, the Razorbacks moved up five spots in the USTFCCCA national poll and are ranked No. 17 in this week’s release. The spot is a season-high position for Arkansas, after starting the season as the 23rd ranked team in the country. In the South Central rankings, the Razorbacks hold steady as the No. 3 team in the region.

Campbell and Wallace are the second and third Arkansas runners to earn conference honors this season. Solomon Haile was named SEC Runner of the Week following his season-opening performance at the Razorback Invitational.
