2013 MPSF TOP INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD PERFORMANCES

Sprints/Hurdles:

In the women’s 60-meter dash, Oregon sophomore English Gardner sprinted to a time of 7.19 (Millrose Games, NYC, Feb. 16), tying for the second fastest in the nation this year. Gardner also owns the top 200-meter time (23.50) for the conference. Arizona senior Georganne Moline achieved a 52.38 in the 400-meter, a personal-best and third in the nation. Kori Carter of Stanford, the 2012 MPSF 60-meter hurdle champion, is atop the conference and seventh nationally this year with a lifetime-best (8.19).

In men’s action, Joe Morris of Colorado owns career-best times of 6.61 in the 60-meter and 21.13 in the 200-meter (both Jan. 12 at Air Force), tying for third and 23rd respectively in the nation this year. Oregon’s Mike Berry has the fastest 400- meter at 46.48, ranking seventh in the nation, while Arizona’s Sean Delfani has a lifetime-best of 46.88 to rank second in the MPSF and 23rd nationally. Defending MPSF Champion John Cabral of Oregon is tied for eighth in the NCAA60-meter hurdles (7.75).

Middle Distance/Distance Races:

Senior Emma Coburn of Colorado ran the fastest mile in the nation this year, 4:29.86 on Feb. 16 in NYC. Oregon owns the top MPSF time in the other three distance events, as Jordan Hasay is a double-event conference leader in the 3,000-meter(8:57.46, 2nd nationally) and 5,000-meter (15:46.30, 5th nationally), along with Laura Roesler in the 800-meter (2:04.66, 6th nationally).

Arizona junior Lawi Lalang leads the conference in distance events. The reigning MPSF Athlete of the Year is at the top of the mile (3:54.56) and 3,000-meter (7:42.79), ranking second and first respectively in the country this year. In breaking the MPSF Championship 3, 000-meter record last year, Lalang shaved nearly 10 seconds off his event time from 2011. Elijah Greer and Jeramy Elkaim of Oregon lead in the 800 (1:48.42) and 5,000 (13:39.35), respectively.

Relays:

Oregon women’s Distance Medley Relay ranks second nationally (11:02.18). Running for the Ducks on Jan. 25 at the Washington Invitational were Kesselring, Roesler, Francis, and Leblanc. Oregon also has the top 4 X 400 Relay (Okodogbe, Francis, Roesler, Gardner) in the conference (3:34.63), which stands sixth nationally. Last year, the Washington Women’s DMR broke a four-year MPSF record as well as the all-time Dempsey Facility record, and was tops across the nation (10:55.01).

Stanford men own the top DMR in the conference (Stutzman, Chase, Lefebure, and Atchoo), ranking third in the NCAA (9:34.20). The Ducks’ 4 X 400 Relay has the best MPSF time of 3:09.25 (Galpin, Delaney, Greer, Berry).

Jumps:

The MPSF continues to excel on a national level in this category for both genders. On the women’s side, two-timedefending MPSF Champion Brigetta Barrett of Arizona shares the top 2013 NCAA High Jump of 6’-3.25” from the Arkansas Invitational on Jan. 25. Barrett won the MPSF competition in 2012 with a meet and facility record jump(6’-4.00”). This height broke her own all-time facility and meet record from the year prior, by one-half inch. Arizona State’s Christabel Nettey, meanwhile, leaped to a nationally second-ranked long jump (21’-5.5”) in New Mexico on Feb. 8, with Kylie Price of UCLA at No. 6 (20-9.25”). The Bruins’ Allison Korssel ties for eighth in the NCAA Pole Vault (13’11”), while Jordan Merback of Stanford tops the MPSF Triple Jump (41’-1.75”)

The MPSF has the NCAA’s No. 1-ranked pole-vaulter in sophomore Michael Woepse of UCLA (18’-4.5”), set on Feb. 8 at New Mexico. BYU senior Victor Weirich vaulted to 18’-2” this year, ranking third across the nation. Chris Benard (52’-6.75”—7th) and Stephan Scott-Ellis (52’-0.5”---10th) are each in the top-10 NCAA Triple Jump, with the latter also sharing the top MPSF Long Jump with Long Beach State freshman Willie Alexander (24’-11.25”). Benard is the defending MPSF Triple Jump Champion, one of two male conference records set last year, on a leap of 53’11.” That mark took down the longest running standard MPSF Indoor Track & Field has seen, as the triple-jump record held true for California’s Len Ozolins (53’-3.25”) since 1995.

Throws:

The MPSF is well represented amongst the nation’s elite in the women’s Shot Put. Arizona senior Alyssa Hasslen ranks third on that chart with a Feb. 9 heave of 57’-4.25.” Arizona State junior Anna Jelmini stands at No. 5 (56’-11.25”), withthree-time Wildcat MPSF Champion Julie Labonte holding the six spot (56’-10.25”). Labonte’s heave of 58’-7.5” a year ago broke her own meet record from 2011. Sun Devil senior Chelsea Cassulo tops the MPSF Weight Throw (68’-4.5”).

The Arizona State men’s shot put ranks No. 1 in the NCAA, thanks to senior Jordan Clarke (67’-6.75”), while Derek White of California has delivered an MPSF-Best weight throw (62’-6”)

Multi Events – Pentathlon:

Defending conference champion Arizona State senior Keia Pinnick is second in the NCAA with a five-event total of 4,208 points from the Texas A&M Challenge on Jan. 25. Second in the MPSF and 21st in the nation is UCLA junior Tatum Souza (3,888), followed by last year’s MPSF Pentathlon Bronze Medalist, Brianne Beemer of Colorado (3,823).

Multi Events – Heptathlon:

Washington senior Jeremy Taiwo leads the NCAA Heptathlon with 6,156 points from the Boise State Challenge on Feb. 8. Oregon junior and last year’s runner-up Dakotah Keys is second in the conference and 13th in the nation with a seven- event total of 5,589 points. UCLA senior Dominic Giovannoni is third with 5,540, right behind Keys at No. 14 nationally.

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field celebrates its 21st year of competition with the 2013 championship meet at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor Facility for the 11th consecutive year, Friday and Saturday (Feb. 22-23). Friday begins at 12 noon (PT) with the women’s weight throw and concludes at 7:25 p.m. with the men’s Distance Medley Relay. The first event Saturday occurs at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. The men’s 4 X 400 meter relay will end this year’s championship meet at 2:40 p.m. The 2013 MPSF Championship features 15 universities comprised from members of the Pac-12, Big West, and West Coast Conferences. A total of 27 teams vie for the conference title, 15 on the women’s side and 12 on the men’s, including first-year women’s participant, University of Hawaii. The Stanford women brought home its MPSF leading eighth title last year, while the Arizona State men won the conference crown for the first time. The Sun Devils’ 131.5 total points and 50- point margin of victory were both the highest the meet has seen since the annual event moved to Seattle a decade ago.

On the women’s side, Oregon is the nation’s second-ranked team with 151.95 points. Arizona State is No. 8 (85.74), Arizona 11th (77.77), Stanford 16th (45.98). Oregon men enter the meet ranked 11th in the nation (64.21), followed by Arizona State 13th (58.24), and Arizona 14th (54.84). Rankings are as of February 19, 2013, provided by www.ustfccca.org.

The 2013 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships will be contested March 8 and 9, at Randal Tyson Track in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Oregon women have won the last three NCAA Titles.
