Janet Bawcom being interviewed pre-race (A cool, sunny 31 F right now. Coldest NYC half-marathon ever)

Race about to get started - 7:30 AM. Sun finally starting to show itself.

7:30 AM -- BOOM! race is off, starting in Central Park.

Mile 1 -- Kim Smith running with some of the elite men, going out in 5:11 for the first mile (under course record pace of 5:13). Men went out in 4:58 so Smith is right on their tails.

Mile 2 -- Rotich joins Kim Smith up front. Pace slows down to 5:23 (last year 2nd mile was 5:10). Sara Moreira (Portugal 1:10:08) also joins the top 3

MIle 3 -- 5:09 for the the last mile. Rotich, Smith and now Yolanda Caballero (Colombia -- 1:12:35) are in the lead. Rotich and Caballero now pushing the pace with Smith a step back. 16:17 through 5k for the three. Perez, Moreira 3 seconds back and Serena Burla is the top American 16:21.

Mile 4 -- 5:24 as they slow a bit. Rotich and Caballero are breaking away a bit from Kim Smith. Still in on quick pace, but slowing a tad.

Mile 5 -- Rotich continues to push the pace. The pack of 3 is now down to 2. Rotich vs. Caballero with Kim Smith falling back just a bit. Rotich continues to push the pace and Caballero is starting to fall back. 1:08:30 pace.

Mile 6 -- Rotich starting to break away from the field. Caballero in second and Kim Smith has fallen back to fourth. Could be a one women show from here on out. Rotich ran 1:08:52 at this race in 2011.

10k

Rotich is looking very smooth, heading into Times Square. Caballero back 4 seconds through 10k. Bawcom is top American 33:08 through 10k and is top American. Lisa Stublic (Columbia grad and national record holder for Crotia in 3k steep, 5k, half marathon and marathon) is moving up.

Mile 7: Picture looks almost identical to the one above. Order has not changed, but Rotich has increased her lead by an even larger margin. No other runners really in sight. 3 seconds off pace from last year.

MIle 8: Course record in sight? Potentially. No one around Rotich as she has 200 meters on the field. Course record from last year is 1:08:35.

MIle 9: Rotich in 1:07 / 1:08 range. 47:39 through 9 miles which is about 5:17 pace. Looking good

15k splits:

Rotich 49:18 through 15k. Bawcom is top American 50:00 in 9th and Diane Nukuri-Johnson (BDI) from Iowa City, IA with a PR of 1:10:55 moving way up and now in 2nd. Kim Smith has dropped out perhaps? Nowhere in sight.

LIs Stublic is having a huge race and is in 2nd. It looks like Rotich now has company with Stublic and Nukuri-Johnson on her heels

Mile 11 -- Huge upset alert. Stublic and Nakuri-Johson, both running at a pace that is about 2 minutes faster than their PR. 58:15 through 11 miles. Johnson's best is 1:10:55 and 1:10:31 for Stublic. Stublic running in front of "home crowd" as she went to Columbia.

Rotich has regained her early lead. starting to pull away slightly from Stublic and Nakuri-Johnson. Just over a mile to go and it is Rotich up by a couple meters, Stublic about 15 meters back.

20k splits--

Rotich 1:05:36, Nakuri-Johnson 1:05:37 and Stublic 1:05:38 through 20k.

Rotich wins it! 1:09:09, 2nd win!

BIG PRS for Nakuri-Johnson (2nd) and Stublic (3rd), both runnin under 1:10 for the first time. 1:09:12 and 1:09:18.
