After Montoya's Triple and Malone's Double, We Can't Wait for the Dream Mile
While we were at the TX State Meet scoping out some potential adidas Dream Mile candidates, some of the golden ticket recipients were making our lives more difficult. At some point, we’re going to have to predict who’s going to win that special mile in New York. After this weekend, we still don’t know.

Bernie Montoya Triples, Makes Us Wish There Was Video of His Last 200m

Two states over in Arizona, Bernie Montoya showed everyone that he’s just not a high schoolers, but a science experiment gone wrong and now he’s wrecking havoc in every race he runs. While we were impressed/not impressed by Andres Arroyo’s triple at his state meet, Montoya must’ve seen that and laughed.

Last week, Montoya went 8:56.30 for 3200 (US#2), 4:05.89 for 1600m (US#2), and 1:50.19 for 800m. There’s not much else to say other than May 25th can’t come any faster.

While we couldn’t find any footage from the Arizona State Meet, we were sent this tweet from Molly Latin that gives us an idea of how the race ended.

Considering Montoya won by seven seconds, we call shenanigans.

Still, Arroyo probably isn’t all that scared. Did we mention that as we speak, Workout Wednesday is still being edited?

Ben Malone First Takes Down King Ches, then the NJ State 1500m Record

We try to not overhype races, but this year’s adidas Dream Mile is going to be incredible. Maybe one of the greatest high school mile fields ever assembled. While we’ve already talked about Montoya, Arroyo, McGorty, Cheserek, Saarel, but we haven’t said much about Pascack Valley’s Ben Malone.

We’ve already known what Malone can do at the end of races, but we got our first taste this year at the Armory Collegiate 1000m, where Malone ruthlessly destroyed the field to run 2:25.82.

Back at the Loucks Games in New York, Malone went up against the King of Cross Country, Edward Cheserek.

The King may not have been fresh, but a heads-up loss is still surprising. Last Thursday night, Cheserek had anchored the St. Benedict DMR squad in 4:03.63. Two days later, it was Malone who would break the tape in the mile.

In a kickers’ race, Malone let loose a 56-second final lap to take the win in 4:09.73 and almost break the 34-year old meet record of 4:09.19. Cheserek would finish in second with a time of 4:11.19.

Malone already showed us that he’s lethal at the end of races, but last weekend, he was on a mission.

Two days later, Malone made the trip to the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet (held at Widener University for those who were confused) and ran in the seeded heat of the 1500m.

I bet the Villanova faithful are a bit excited for him to be a Wildcat.

In his Pascack Valley green jersey that probably hadn’t been washed (due to superstition, of course), Malone ran like a seasoned veteran in a race full of savvy collegians. He simply bided his time, stayed out of trouble, and then used that same kick we saw a couple of days earlir to finish third in 3:46.97. While it's not often run, his winning time is still a New Jersey state record.

Wheels, good racing tactics, and cojones? Like we said, May 25th couldn’t come any sooner.
