  Nelson Officially Awarded Athens Olympic Gold Medal

INDIANAPOLIS - The IAAF and the IOC has officially awarded Adam Nelson (Atlanta, Ga.)  the 2004 Olympic gold medal in the shot put.

The official results of the 2004 Athens Olympics list Nelson in first place with his throw of 21.16m/69-5.25. The men’s competition was held on Aug. 18, 2004 in the ancient Olympic Stadium at Olympia.

“It has been a long wait for Adam, but we are thrilled to see him justly rewarded,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “Adam is one of the greatest shot putters in history. Adding this Olympic gold medal to his 2005 World Championship, 2000 Olympic silver medal, and countless other medals and honors only reinforces his already impressive legacy.”

Nelson's indredible list of medals now includes the 2004 Olympic gold, 2000 Olympic silver, 2005 World gold and three World silver medals. Nelson medaled at every outdoor World Championship and Olympic Games from 2000 through 2007. Nelson is also a seven-time USA Champion.

Nelson was originally awarded the silver medal before Yuriy Bilonoh of Ukraine was stripped of the gold December 2012 due to a doping violation.
