SHOCKER: Wariner, Nellum, Taylor out of 400m
STUNNED . . . SHOCKED! Do those words even do justice to what happened in the prelims of the Men's 400-meters?
Bryshon Nellum, Jeremy Wariner and Angelo Taylor did not qualify for the semi-finals of the 400-meter run at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Bryshon Nellum, Jeremy Wariner and Angelo Taylor did not qualify for the semi-finals of the 400-meter run at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Nellum, a recent graduate from University of Southern California, was perhaps the biggest surprise. Last summer, he qualified for the 400-meter at the London Olympics by getting third at the Olympic Trials. He competed on the 4x400m relay team that got silver in London.
Even after a stellar 2012 summer, Nellum had the year of his life setting personal records in the 200 and 400-meter races and winning his first NCAA Championship in the 400-meter run.
Nellum’s poor performance most likely had to do with a hamstring strain in practice earlier this week.
The only person who ran slower than Nellum was Jeremy Wariner. Wariner, a three-time gold medalist at the Olympics, had the slowest time of the 30 finishers in the event. It looked as if he shut down upon realizing he was not going to qualify to the next round.
The adidas runner dashed his chances at qualifying for the final on time by slowing up to a near walk right before the finish line.
Wariner at 29 years is one of the oldest compeitors in the field, but he doesn't top the oldest runner, Angelo Taylor at 34 yearso of age.
Fast times usually come with experience, but that can only last for so long. Age catches up.
Angelo Taylor, a 2-time Olympic Gold medalist in the 400-meter Hurdles, dropped to a 46.98 finishing time getting last in the third of four heats. Taylor also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that won silver in London.
Tony McQuay of adidas, Josh Mance, and Arman Hall of University of Florida ran the top three times in the prelims. The semi-finals will be run tomorrow night at 7:52.
