The summer track circuit happens so fast, that plenty of small news can get swept under the rug. Unlike the other seasons where everything is geared towards the weekends, all sorts of meets are held throughout the week. It’s a bit like baseball, I guess. As much as I like watching games almost everyday, I’m also usually kicking myself for not setting my fantasy team’s roster.
So between the USA Championships (last week), the USA Youth Champs (ongoing) Ostrava (today), Edmonton (tomorrow), Harry Jerome (Sunday), and Birmingham (Sunday), some important tidbits may go unnoticed.
Remember last year’s U.S. Olympic Trials dark horse, Jackie Areson? In her first season as a professional, Areson ran 15:14.13 to win the OXY High Performance 5k. Not a bad start, right?
However, Areson bowed out of the Trials after finishing 12th in her heat of the 5k (16:11.19).
This year, she qualified for the U.S. Championships with a 15:27 performance at OXY, so where was she in Des Moines?
Well actually, she wasn't in Des Moines. She wasn't even in the U.S. Areson was in Spain because she’s starting to change her citizenship from American to Australian.
If you’re wondering why or what inspired the change, Mario Fraioli at Competitor has an informative interview with the soon-to-be Aussie.
