He’s coming back to the east coast. Donn Cabral has announced that he’ll be joining the New Jersey-New York Track Club.

“As happy as I was with the coaching in Washington, I knew I wanted a group; the decision was which one,” Cabral told Flotrack. “Coach Oviatt has always spoken very highly of coach Gagliano and my time back home made me realize how important it is to be near friends and family.”

“This seems the perfect fit for many reasons,"
Cabral added. "I’m excited to get healthy and start training with the group soon!”

Though there aren’t too many male steeplechasers in the group, Cabral will still have some company for general and race specific workouts alike. The 2012 Olympian will presumably train with Travis Mahoney, who ran a personal best of 8:30.87 this season in the 3kST.

Cabral’s lone stint out west was most likely not the way he wanted to begin his professional running career. After a breakout season which saw the Princeton graduate run a personal best of 8:19.14 and finish eighth at the London Olympics, the momentum that carried him through last summer may have stalled. Though he ran a promising 3:56.41 mile at the Husky Classic in February, Cabral’s seasonal best was just 8:34.23 and he finished a disappointing sixth at the U.S. Championships.

But it’s a new year and a new coast. With the addition of Cabral and Columbia’s Kyle Merber, the NJ-NY Track Club is quietly becoming the strongest training group the east of the Mississippi.

Even though it’s a good fit for Cabral
- both training and lifestyle-wise - we think he’ll be alright with the group as long as the topic of HEPS doesn’t come up too often.
