Pacers dropped off before the 3,000-meter mark and Chelanga pushed Rupp for most of the remainder of the race. Fans saw flashes of the NCAA Cross Country National Championships when the two runners squared off as collegiate stars. Rupp defeated Chelanga for the NCAA title in 2008 by five seconds.
Former North Carolina cross-country state champion Taylor Gilland executed his job as the pacer perfectly. He previously ran 8:11 in college and works over 80 hours in a week as a mergers and acquisitions analyst for The Blackstone Group in Boston.
