Farah to return to the track at PTF

By Dennis Young

You were probably already planning your Sunday evening around watching the Portland Track Festival live on Flotrack (forget about that Game of Thrones nonsense), but juuuuuuust in case you weren’t: Mo Farah is returning to the track after nearly a yearlong hiatus, as first reported by Ken Goe of The Oregonian.

Farah was all but invincible on the track from 2011 to 2013. But his ten-month foray on the roads showed him to be decidedly human, as Farah lost to Kenenisa Bekele in September’s Great North Run and ran a underwhelming 2:08:21 debut at the London Marathon in April. Sunday’s 5000 meters (9:15 Pacific, LIVE on Flotrack) will be his first track race since winning the 10,000-meters and 5,000-meters at the World Championships in Moscow last August.

After stronger-than-expected workouts, coach Alberto Salazar and Farah made the last minute decision to kick off their track season in their Rip City backyard. Salazar told Goe that Farah’s workouts gave him the green light to hit the tartan, saying “I wanted to be positive before we committed. Mo had a great workout today.”

The meet kicks off on Saturday evening.
