Albuquerque field-of-play working group releases report
7/3/2014
The USA Track & Field board of directors on Thursday released the report of the working committee to examine processes and decisions as they related to the men’s and women’s 3,000 meters at the 2014 USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque.
The group, appointed by President and Chair Stephanie Hightower in April, examined documents, video and conducted interviews in weekly meetings since that time.
Working group chair Bob Hersh presented the group’s report to USATF’s board of directors Wednesday evening. The 10-page report includes a summary of findings and recommendations to USATF moving forward to clarify USATF rules, roles and responsibilities for competition-related issues.
“I would like to thank Bob and his group for their deliberate and thoughtful efforts in this matter,” USATF President and Chair Stephanie Hightower said. “What we have seen in this instance, as well as other competition-related controversies in recent years, is that our rules in some cases fail to address how to decide certain field-of-play issues, as well as who should decide them. The group’s recommendations will provide the blueprint for eliminating the shortcomings of our current rules and processes to decrease the chances of similar situations happening in the future.”
