Lawi vs. Ches Outdoor 5k & 1500
Lawi Lalang had a dominance over the entire NCAA throughout his career, until Edward Cheserek came into the picture. Their Pac-12 Conference Championships matchup in the 1500m saw Lawi avenge Ches after Ches took the first victory at NCAA Indoors (5k). Their times, 3:36.34 and 3:36.50, were the two-fastest times recorded in the year. Their second matchup of the outdoor season came at NCAA Outdoors. With 800m left, Lawi and Ches began to break away from Mohammed Ahmed. When it looked as if Ches’ kick would break Lawi, Lawi fought back in the final 100m to win his first NCAA title of 2014. Their times, broke the NCAA meet record and provided everybody in the stands with one of the most exciting finishes in history.
