Friday Focus: Laura Roesler

In our weekly Q&A segment we asked Laura Roesler a few questions about life on and off the track. We caught up with her during her training as she gears up for this indoor season.

How has life been after graduating?

Life was pretty hectic right after graduating. I moved out and drove all the way to Texas then flew right to Europe to start competing. Now that I am settled everything is going really well, especially not having any school responsibilities to worry about. Training is going well, it’s been a long time since I’ve raced and I’m ready to get going again.

What is your most bizarre pet peeve?

It’s not really a pet peeve, but I hate hair. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate it. It’s gross.

What celebrity would you trade lives with and why?

I’m going to say Jim Carrey (I realize he’s a man) because Bruce Almighty is my favorite movie ever and I think he’s hilarious and would be fun to be around.

Describe your childhood dream.

When I was little I told my dad I was going to play college soccer and asked him who the best college soccer team was in the country. He said North Carolina so I told him I was going to go there on a soccer scholarship. All he said was “good for you.”

Describe your fondest race memory.

I’m going to say the 800 finals at Outdoor NCAA’s this year. Because I felt so at home and felt like the whole crowd was so warm and proud of me. And when I turned around I could see my whole family (like 40 family members) in bright neon shouting and raising their hands. It was awesome.

Describe your worst habit.

I would say how I have to have everything perfectly organized and clean all the time. It’s borderline obsessive.

Describe the kind of kid you were in high school.

Very focused. I always had my sights set on what needed to be done. I think I was a goody-two-shoes.

If you had a day off from your everyday responsibilities, describe how you would spend it?

Sitting.

Describe your most embarrassing moment as an athlete.

I honestly can’t think of anything, my time is still coming.

Tell us about your favorite memory with one of your current or past training partners.

My junior year in college over spring break we were doing 150’s. I started the workout and the other sprinters started about 10 minutes after me. I was tired and it was hard to hit the times so when Coach Johnson wasn’t looking I moved the cone. On the last rep a couple of the girls ran like 15 or 16 seconds for a 150 and a couple of my teammates said they had moved the cone too. All in all it had been moved like 4 times so we were probably running about 140’s. Coach Johnson found out right away (it was pretty obvious) and we had to do another workout later.

Describe the perfect post-race meal in detail.

A totally plain burger (don’t judge me), garlic fries, and a chocolate shake.

What "Most Likely To" superlative would you be most honored to receive and why?

Probably “Most Likely To” survive the hunger games. Because that would mean I’m a total boss lady.

Describe your favorite workout?

Probably repeat 200’s fast, like around 25 seconds with 5 minutes rest. You get to run really fast and it’s not too long where it’s really tiring.

Who is your childhood hero and why?

I’m going to go with my Dad. Because he just told me to say that.

Describe your guilty pleasure.

Anything sweet. Cookies, candy, ice cream. I always have candy with me.

If you could give one piece of advice to any runner that is looking to compete at the next level, what would it be and why?

Control what you can control. My coach told me this in college and it really changed my whole perspective. When you stop focusing on all the outside things and what other people are doing, you can really focus on yourself what you need to do.

Describe your favorite place to run or train.

Anywhere really hot and sunny.

Dinner for 3 (living or dead) who and why?

Martin Luther King, Malala Yousafzai, and Jane Goodall because they were/are such an important part of shaping our history and because I love animals.

Describe your pre-race ritual.

I’m not one to be super superstitious or have rituals I just like to do the same routine. I always make sure to eat something while I just chill out and listen to music and play Sudoku puzzles or read before I warm-up.

What is the one song you just can't help but dance to?

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

What does racing/training look like for you in the next 6 months?

I’m hoping to race a few meets indoors and would love to run at World Relays. Then gearing up to have a shot at making the 2015 World Championship Team.
