Chelanga To Train With Lagat In Tucson
Sam Chelanga is headed to Tucson to join one of the fastest training groups in the world.
The four-time NCAA champion at Liberty and Nike-sponsored athlete will join Bernard Lagat, Stephen Sambu, and Lawi Lalang at the University of Arizona based group which is coached by James Li. The move was announced by Chelanga’s new training partner on Twitter.
The 29-year-old had been living and training in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he logged miles with 13:02 5k’er Ben True. Chelanga himself was a bit inconsistent in 2014, running a 13:04.35 5k indoors (that one that Galen Rupp also ran), but only managing a 13:16 effort outdoors. His PB in the 10,000m stands at 27:08, the collegiate record he ran in 2010. Chelanga is still the course record holder at the Lavern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, IN., his 28:41 NCAA victory in 2009.
The Kenyan born Chelanga has been in the process of becoming an American citizen for the last several years.
