WHAT TO WATCH: The Meyo Invite

The Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame is one of the oldest and most competitive competitions in the midwest. Located on the just-over-300m track of the beautiful Loftus Sports Center, the Fighting Irish continue to bring together the top athletes from across the Midwest and beyond. Their signature events, the Meyo Mile and the Ryan Shay 3000m. The Meyo Invite will be LIVE ON FLOTRACK, and due to conference rules, the event will be broadcast LIVE ONLY, NO ARCHIVES! It’s now or never to watch this marquee event!

Men's Mile
This year’s Meyo Mile features three-time winner Jeremy Rae. Rae ended his tenure as one of the Fighting Irish last spring and is the reigning Meyo champion. He recently traveled to Austin with his group, the Speed River New Balance Club, for some winter training. Let’s hope it pays off. He’ll go against last year’s runner-up Sam Penzenstadler of Loyola, who went on to finish third in the 1500m at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Rae’s teammate Taylor Milne, Indiana’s stud Rorey Hunter, and Michigan All American Mason Ferlic are other names to be on the look out for.

Men's 3k
The men’s 3k could be an interesting one. Nick Happe, the 2014 ACC Champion for 5000m and recent Notre Dame alum leads this group of All Americans. Michigan’s Morsi Rayyan ran 7:57.08 in 2014 and was an NCAA qualifier in the 10k. Texas All American Craig Lutz will be searching for his first sub-8:00 mark and has already run 13:47 this season in the 5k. Louisville’s Edwin Kibichiy ran 13:53.18 against Lutz and Butler’s Erik Peterson was an All American in cross country. Last year, the cut-off to advance to the NCAA championships was 7:53.53. Here’s hoping a few of these men achieve this mark.

Men's Sprints
On the sprint side, former Pittsburgh Panther Brycen Spratling will go against former Notre Dame great Patrick Feeney for 400m. At last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships, Spratling was fourth, while Feeney just missed the final. They’ll be challenged by 400m hurdler All American Ali Arastu of Michigan, who is making his 2015 debut in the event. In the 60m hurdles, top returner Donovan Robertson of Ohio State, who bested some of the best in the country at the Rod McCravy Memorial a few weeks ago, will match-up with 2012 Olympian Jeff Porter. Porter famously dove across the finish line to secure the third and final spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

Women's Mile
The women’s Meyo Mile features several All Americans, as promised. Notre Dame favorite Danielle Aragon was a member of their third-place DMR at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships. Michigan’s Brook Handler finished sixth in the 1500m in 2014 and holds a PR of 4:37 for this event, and her teammate, Shannon Osika, has an identicle PR and is always competitive.

Women's 5k
The women’s 5k, scheduled for Friday evening, could be fast. Two of the nation’s top cross country runners, Notre Dame’s Molly Seidel and Princeton’s Megan Curham, are slated to go head-to-head. The Meyo Invite record is 15:58.69, and these two ladies are more than capable of breaking that mark.

Women's Sprints
Another Porter may look familiar in the 60m hurdles, as Tiffany Porter, 2013 World Championships Bronze Medalist for 100mh and 2014 World Indoor 60mh Bronze Medalist, for Great Britain and former 3x NCAA Champion for Michigan, is entered against her sister, Wolverine standout Cindy Ofili. Ofili won two Big Ten titles in 2014 and was sixth in last year’s indoor contest. They’ll be challenged by Notre Dame All American Jade Barber.
