That Happened: Recapping the NCAA Weekend

So much went down on the NCAA scene this weekend that we felt needed some attention. Here at FloTrack, we only wish teleporting was a thing so we could be at every single invite across the country (Oh, wait that’s just me? Whatever). Click for all the Mt. SAC Relays and Michael Johnson Classic coverage, but read below to see some head turning performances from the weekend.

LSU Alumi Gold (FULL RESULTS)
Vernon Norwood, the 2015 Indoor 400m Champion from LSU blazed to an NCAA No. 1 44.44 on his home track. That time is just behind Kirani James’ 44.31 from the previous weekend and ranks No. 2 in the world. Is Norwood following Deon Lendore in becoming the next double 400m champion for 2015?

Larry Ellis Invite (FULL RESULTS)
Jesse Garn of Binghamton, the infamous disqualified athlete in the NCAA indoor 800m, finished second to Robby Andrews and beat Kyle Merber in the 800m, running 1:47.03. He ranks No. 6 in the NCAA and hopefully will make it to the NCAA starting line come June.

Villanova made a strong case as 1500U on Friday evening. Jordan Williamsz won over Penn’s Tommy Awad, 3:39.53 - 3:40.68. But then hey check 'Nova out:
Robert Denault 3:40.78
Sam McEntee 3:43.50
Josh Lampron 3:42.83 (Section 2)
Dusty Solis 3:42.91 (Section 2)
Patrick Tiernan 3:45.43 (Section 3)

Princeton star Megan Curham ran 15:54.03 for her first sub-16:00 effort. The cross country All American and NCAA 10 qualifier in 2014 beat the field by nearly 30 seconds. Not an easy task. But judging by the looks of the names who DNF’d (NJNY Track club members Nicole Tully, Lauren Penny, Ashley Higginson and more), she had some help. Kudos NJNYTC!

Virginia Challenge (FULL RESULTS)
The most impressive men’s 1500m from the weekend wasn’t at Mt. SAC or Oregon or even the Villanova-loaded Princeton race. It was true freshman Justyn Knight running 3:39.66 in Virginia. Knight redshirted the indoor season, probably to focus on running World Junior Cross Country, where he finished 25th for Team Canada. He ran unattached at the Penn State National, running 3:59.51 to set a Canadian National Junior Record and cement himself as the No. 6 All Time Junior in the mile. So we know he’s good. No doubt that 14:08.93 5000m PB will be broken this season.

The Michigan State distance ladies looked a lot like they did in cross country season. Fast. Leah O’Connor made her 2015 debut in the steeplechase, a solo 9:41.88 for an NCAA No. 1 mark. Rachele Schulist smashed the MSU 5k record running 15:36.33, the No. 5 mark in the NCAA, and remarkably her first time breaking 16:00. Julie Otwell (16:05.75) and Lindsay Clark (16:08.08) also impressed.

However, one name that caught our eye? Runner-up Erin Finn from Michigan finishing in 15:41.80. Before April 4, Finn hadn’t raced since Pre-Nats in October before unfortunately suffering a season-ending injury that shattered Michigan’s chances of getting on the podium. Since then she’s raced a 3k at the Cal-Michigan-Virginia Tri-Meet, losing to Bethan Knights and running 9:24.55. So to come back and go through 3000m (rabbited perfectly by O’Connor) in 9:19 and stay on Schulist’s heels is impressive. She may not have won, but the NCAA should be scared of Finn, who ran 15:26.08 as a true freshman in 2014.

Oregon Relays (FULL RESULTS)
It was the Annie Leblanc Show in Eugene this weekend. And we’re taking notice. On Friday evening, Leblanc had a monster kick to take down Mary Cain in the 1500m. Leblanc finished in 4:16.17 and Cain ran 4:17.91. Is this the slowest opener ever from Cain? That’s another story. Then on Saturday, Leblanc took the 800m in 2:04.49, nipping NOP's Treniere Moser by .5 at the line. Two-for-two on beating world class athletes. Not too shabby.
