Alan Webb Injured In Bike Crash

At the Dallas CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon American Cup, Alan Webb suffered from a crash on the bike portion of the race, fracturing his scapula and two ribs on the course Saturday morning.

“I fractured my scapula and two ribs, there have been much more serious bike crashes than mine, it just hurt. I was in the hurt locker,” Webb said over the phone.

Hi wife Julia Webb posted a photo of Webb in the hospital on Facebook saying, “Alan’s race update…Was in great position with the leaders on final bike lap just before transition to the run…Bad crash…Just diagnosed fractured scapula, 3rd and 4th ribs. Poor guy.”

Webb was rounding the final turn of the last bike loop with the leaders when he collided with another athlete on the course. Webb “had no time to react” as the biker in front of him swerved while breaking suddenly. Both fell to the ground and were unable to finish the race.

“The funny thing was that I was sharing the lead better than almost any other race than I’d been apart of,” Webb said.

“We were going 25 miles per hour, and I just didn’t have any time to react,” he said.

After the fall on the straight-away, Webb was taken off the course and carried to the nearest hospital where the doctors informed him that recovery for the fractures would take up to eight weeks.

The 33-year-old Beaverton, Ore. native made the transition to triathlon after retiring from professional running in 2013. In his running days, Webb set the U.S. high school mile record of 3:53 in 2001 and later the American record of 3:46 in 2007.
