Allie Ostrander's World Title Headlines Big Weekend For NCAA Freshmen Ladies

With the first big weekend of NCAA cross country a mere five days away, most teams have already gotten their rust-buster meets out of the way as they prepare for more competitive races later in the season. While most results from these early September contests are of little importance relative to the big picture of the collegiate season, there are certain performances that always raise an eyebrow and preview bigger things to come in the near future.

No I’m not talking about Edward Cheserek or even Dom Scott, they’re proven NCAA contenders, I’m talking about the freshmen, the newbies who are anxious to get their feet wet as they step up to the big leagues for the first time. Even small dual meets are critical first steps for newcomers on the collegiate circuit, as they answer two questions: 1. Are you healthy? and 2. Can you handle the step up in competition?

Particularly for those hyped-up freshmen who were superstars in high school, NCAA debuts are always analyzed under a microscope. Since the majority of the men have yet to debut (i.e. Fisher, Maton, Hacker, Anderson), today we’re taking a look at some of the country’s best freshmen ladies. These ladies have answered my two hypothetical questions with a resounding "yes!".

Anna Rohrer Wins Notre Dame Debut

When two-time Foot Locker champion Anna Rohrer decided to stay home for college and attend Notre Dame, the Irish were instantly propelled into the spotlight and entered the fall ranked 7th in the Saucony Flo50. Rohrer and reigning NCAA 10K champion Molly Seidel make for a formidable 1-2 punch, one that surely has Coach Matt Sparks excited for championship season.

2x Foot Locker champion Anna Rohrer continued her winning ways in her collegiate debut

Rohrer made her highly-anticipated debut on Friday in South Bend at the National Catholic Championships, winning the 5K race in 17:20. The Mishawaka, IN native was one of the most highly sought after recruits in the Class of 2015 after becoming just the fifth girl in history to win two Foot Locker titles. Rohrer also broke the national high school record in the indoor 5K this past March, running 16:10 to win the New Balance Nationals title.

Next up for Rohrer and the #7 Lady Irish will be the Notre Dame Invitational on October 2nd.

Ryen Frazier Crushes Course Record In N.C. State Debut

Another high-level recruit that chose to stay close to home made her much-anticipated N.C. State debut, and what an impressive one it was, as Wolfpack freshman Ryen Frazier won the adidas XC Challenge on Friday in a stunning 16:06 5K PR, which bettered the previous course record by 22-seconds.

Ryen Frazier ran a 16:06 5K PR to better the course record and win the adidas XC Challenge in her N.C. State debut

Last year’s Foot Locker XC runner-up enters her freshman campaign after a stunning senior track season that saw her run 4:38 in the mile and 10:05 for 3200m, as well as becoming just the second girl in history to complete the distance triple at New Balance Outdoor Nationals, winning the mile, 2-mile, and 5,000m all in one weekend. Who is the other woman to complete the distance triple at NBN?

It’s none other than Frazier’s older sister Wesley, who transferred to N.C. State after originally attending Duke. The elder Frazier finished second to her younger sister on Friday in 16:28 running unattached.

Ryen Frazier and her #12 Wolfpack will next travel to South Bend for the Notre Dame XC Invite, where Frazier will get her first collegiate matchup against Rohrer.

Allie Ostrander Wins World Junior Mountain Running Title In Wales

While both Rohrer and Frazier recorded impressive victories over the weekend, neither of them garnered the distinction of “World champion” like Boise State frosh Allie Ostrander did on Saturday in Wales. The Kenai (AK) native became just the second American woman to win the World Junior Mountain Running title, covering the rugged 2.92 mile course with 820 ft. of elevation change in 19:44 and winning by a sizable 39-seconds.

The 2014 NXN champion has a lot of experience in mountain running, as the 18-year-old has competed in the legendary Mount Marathon race in Seward, Alaska since the age of 12. This past July, Ostrander finished second in her debut in the women’s senior race after six straight years of winning the women’s junior title.

Ostrander already made her Bronco debut on September 11th, winning the Dual in Speedway Meadow in San Francisco in 20:44 for 6K. Next up she’ll face a deep field at the Roy Griak Invitational this Saturday, LIVE on FloTrack
