ASICS Future Stars: Freshman Boys Update #2

The calendar reads October 8th, which means we’re right in the thick of cross country season, where future stars begin to shine. The following list of freshmen are really separating themselves from the pack, and proving that you should keep an eye on them for the next four years.

Here’s the ASICS Future Stars Freshman Boys Update #2:

Cruz Gomez (Alamo, TX)

PSJA Memorial’s Cruz Gomez has been right around 16:00 for 5K all season, but he broke out in a big way last Saturday at the McNeil Invite with his victory and 15:36 PR. The time appears to be a bit deceiving on a day where PRs were dropping like flies, but regardless, the Texas frosh now owns the the fastest 5K by a 9th grader in 2015.

Camren Fischer (Fayetteville, AR)

After coming close to his first sub-16:00 5K with his 16:03 at the Missouri Southern Stampede on September 19th, and running an impressive 16:30 on the brutally tough Oklahoma State Jamboree course one week later, Fayetteville High freshman Camren Fischer finally broke through this past weekend with a 15:43 PR at his hometown Chile Pepper XC Festival. The time is second-best for a frosh in 2015.

Zachary Kinne (Naperville, IL)

Neuqua Valley’s Zachary Kinne returns for his second appearance on the Future Stars list as he has retained his second spot on the freshman 3-mile leaderboard since our last update. Kinne nearly equaled his 15:04 best last weekend at the Peoria Invitational with his impressive 15:05 clocking.

Diego Zuazua (Brentwood, TN)

When Ravenwood High’s Diego Zuazua ran 15:47 to place 15th this past weekend at the Jesse Owens Classic, the freshman simultaneously lowered his PR by 51-seconds and set his school’s cross country record. Oh, and he’s now the eighth-fastest freshman in the 5K this season.

Zane Fodge (McMinnville, OR)

Most freshmen are happy just to keep improving throughout their first high school season, but for McMinnville High’s Zane Fodge, that’s clearly not good enough. The frosh has three wins already on his resume this fall, with his most impressive coming at the Meriwether National XC Classic where he smoked a 15:47 5K.

Sam Affolder (Carthage, N.Y.)

While his older brother Noah was crushing a 14:14 course record last weekend at the McQuaid Invitational in Rochester, N.Y., freshman Sam Affolder was making waves of his own as his 14:58 third place finish in the 3-mile contest made him the first 9th grader to dip under the 15:00 barrier this season.
