Syracuse Men Win NCAA Cross Country Championship

The Syracuse Orange winning the 2015 NCAA Cross Country team title over two-time defending champions Colorado was the biggest upset in college running this year. SyracuseÂ’s last team title was in 1951, but more importantly it had been 20 years since a team not named Colorado, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin, Oregon, Stanford or Arkansas won a menÂ’s championship.

The Orange were coming off a disappointing fifth-place showing in 2014, but going into 2015 they were strong contenders to dethrone the Colorado Buffaloes. On race day, the Orange did just that as they secured a 82-91 win over Colorado led by the standout trio of Justyn Knight, Martin Hehir and Colin Bennie. The race between these two teams was close throughout itÂ’s entirety as the two squads were virtually tied at 99 pts with just 2K to go. CuseÂ’s Head Coach Chris Fox himself admitted in his post meet interview that he would have been happy with a podium finish, but as the race moved along and the Orange inched closer to Colorado, the settling for podium went out the window and the Syracuse men pulled off the upset of the year in the NCAA.
