After suffering a devastating fall and tearing her ACL in the Olympic 5K preliminary, Abbey D'Agostino is making a speedy recovery and chronicling her excitement on her progress through Instagram. D'Agostino posted a picture of a page in her training log titled "ACL Recovery Log" on Monday, which showed a timeline of her progress over the past three weeks.
"3 weeks post-op and reflecting on PROGRESS! I am grateful! #babysteps #godisgood #alwaysinbeta @nbrunning," D'Agostino wrote. The log follows her surgery, which took place on September 6.
D'Agostino and New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin both received the Fair Play Award from the International Fair Play Committee after the pair's display of sportsmanship in Rio. Over halfway through the race, both runners collided and crashed to the ground. After the pack of runners flew ahead, D'Agostino got up and helped Hamblin to her feet before falling back to the ground in pain. Hamblin reached out for D'Agostino, extending the same kind gesture to her competitor. D'Agostino and Hamblin both finished the race and a successful protest earned them a spot in the Olympic final. Unfortunately, D'Agostino suffered a torn ACL during the collision and was unable to compete.
D'Agostino and Hamblin both became symbols of the "Olympic spirit" when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a statement that read: "The D'Agostino and Hamblin story is one of true humanity and sacrifice which has already captured the hearts of people across the globe."
D'Agostino's training log continued by detailing her Week 2 progress, "TRIED SPIN BIKE! Half rotation…full extension!"
Her third and most recent log described a big breakthrough in her recovery.
"Beginning: @ follow-up appt., cleared to weight bearing (100 %), & DRIVING! & lap swim w/pull buoy," she wrote. "AKA BEST DAY EVER."
