Brie Oakley ran 15:55.75 to break the national high school record for the indoor 5K at New Balance Nationals Indoor on Thursday night in New York. The UC-Berkeley commit, who hails from Grandview High School in Colorado, is the first female prep runner to finish in under 16 minutes indoors. The 2017 season marks the seventh year in a row that a girl has broken the 5K record at this event. She pulled away from the field with an opening mile of 5:04 and split 9:30 for 3K.

Oakley's new standard is a full 13 seconds faster than Weini Kelati's prior record of 16:08, which in turn beat Anna Rohrer's 2015 record by two seconds. The national outdoor record is 15:45.46, set by Mary Cain in 2013. Six girls have broken 16 minutes outdoors, and Oakley ranks No. 5 all-time.

Sara Platek of North Carolina ran 16:48.09 for second place.

Oakley will race the Championship Two Mile on Sunday.
