LIVE UPDATES: 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships Day 1
There are finals tonight in both 10Ks, the men's hammer, and women's javelin, triple jump and discus. The first rounds of the men's 800, women's steeplechase, and men's and women's 100 and 400 are also tonight. The 10Ks begin with the women's race at 9:27 PM Pacific.

That's a wrap on day one. See you tomorrow. Full 10K recaps and interviews hitting the site now.

Men's 10K
10:19 Pacific

Your worlds team:
29:01.44 Hassan Mead
29:01.68 Shadrack Kipchirchir
29:02.64 Leonard Korir

Simbassa fourth, Galen Rupp fifth. Rupp had won the last eight USATF 10K titles.

Gun is off. Let's go. Much like the women's finish it seems like there are four athletes for three spots: Galen Rupp, Hassan Mead, Shadrack Kipchirchir, and Hassan Mead.

They're jogging. 72.x at 400. Rupp wearing a hat!

Daniel Tapia the nominal leader but they're at 3:08 at 1K, about the pace the women were running.
Rupp and his hat are in fourth. Everyone is together, obviously.

There is a water table on the backstretch; Ben Bruce used it.

5:08 at 1600 meters, a pace not worth calculating.

6:28 @ 2K, so 3:08, 3:19.x, yikes

Chelanga now hammering, let's GO. Rupp is the only one to cover it

Chelanga's split a 64!

Couple guys up there now, 2:56 to a 9:24 3K split

Korir, Mead, Chris Derrick, Shaddy, Simbassa all there. gap from Chelanga to Rupp then gap from Rupp to everyone else.

65 flat lap from Korir but then he lets everyone catch up

Chelanga is surging and slowing, putting a gap on everyone then letting them catch up. it's fun. the group behind him is solidly ten deep

12:09 4K split so a 2:45 kilo split...that's 27:30 pace

As Derrick catches Chelanga another surge goes in. Derrick, a now-hatless Rupp, Mead, leading the large group

Derrick now catches Chelanga completely. Will there be another surge?

Yes

14:58 @ 5k, 2:49 k split

Chelanga running like this is entertaining as hell

Chelanga leads that group by about eight meters, Rupp now trying to catch Chelanga (Why? unclear but it's making this race entertaining)

Rupp storms past Chelanga! This is fantastic.

Chelanga re-gaps everyone again

17:46 @ 6k, 2:48 k split

Rupp, Mead, Simbassa leading the chasers who are now seven deep -

Rupp, Mead, Simbassa, Kipchirchir, Korir, Derrick, Estrada, a little shoving in there

They are all way behind Chelanga.

Estrada takes over the chase group, Simbassa, Mead, Rupp behind him. they are putting in a move on Chelanga

7K split is 20:41, 2:55 split, they slowed down a lot

Estrada pulls everyone within maybe two meters of Chelanga who immediately throws in another surge and opens the gap

Now Estrada going around and Chelanga LETS him do it. Chelanga is tucking in!

ok, reset here - Estrada on the rail, Chelanga next to him, NEVER MIND, HUGE SURGE, THIS IS GREAT

8k split as Chelanga surges again - 23:38 (2:57)

Chelanga is jogging with Mead and Estrada behind him, Korir, Rupp, Derrick, Simbassa, Kipchirchir all there

mile to go coming up. we'll see if chelanga goes again, it's been a while.

24:52 with 1600 to go and Chelanga goes hard again. Mead covers it. then Rupp starts to. in fact everyone does and they are slowing down again. there is a second pack that has been kind of let back in the race if they slow down again

Rupp takes over. Korir and Mead covering. CHELANGA IS DROPPED. Thank you, though, Sam, you made that race fun.

Wait Rupp now slowed down, let Korir/Estrada take over, and Chelanga back in at the back.

Derrick and Korir dropping bombs on the backstretch. this rules. Chelanga and Estrada dropped

Derrick, Mead, Simbassa, Korir, Kipchirchir, Rupp

Everyone goes around Derrick. pack of five CAN RUPP LOSE?

NO TEAM FOR RUPP

MEAD, KIPCHIRCHIR, KORIR, SIMBASSA, RUPP

last four laps will be here -
64.5
65.6
62.1
55.2

Women's 10K
9:27 Pacific

Your worlds team:
31:19.86 Molly Huddle
31:22.67 Emily Infeld (PR)
31:25.64 Emily Sisson (PR)

Flanagan was a well-beaten fourth, five seconds back. Natosha Rogers and Erin Finn were fifth and sixth. Kim Conley will try her luck at dropping out of the 10K and making the 5K team for the second year in a row.

Loaded field here. Emily Infeld and Molly Huddle made the Olympic 10K team last year, Kim Conley made it in the 5K, Amy Cragg is already on the 2017 worlds team in the marathon, and Shalane Flanagan is one of the greatest American runners of all time. And watch for Natosha Rogers and Emily Sisson here.

Cragg is a scratch. more updates in a second, sorry, i stepped out of the media area because it is very very hot in here.

3:09 @ 1K Flanagan, Huddle, Sissison, Infeld, Cnley, Rogers with a small lead over everyone else

6:16 2k; they were 5:02 at 1600 meters. they are visibly hammering. Flanagan trying to grind everyone down in the heat. pack is Flanagan, Huddle, Sissons, Infeld, Natosha Rogers, Conley, in that order.

Natosha Rogers is actually the US outdoor leader @ 5K. 3k split coming

9:24. so 3:09, 3:07, 3:08. this is a loaded group and they are working hard.

They are running 31:20 pace in 85 degree heat in a championship. To give you an idea of how hard that is, 31:18 is the #10 US 10K performer.

Obviously Huddle and Flanagan have gone 30:low, but here are the PRs of the rest of that group as they run roughly 31:20 pace:
-Sisson 31:32
-Conley 31:35
-Rogers 31:59
-Infeld 31:26

12:36 @ 4k, so they slowed slightly, but not insanely. this is still hard.

Conley fell a little off just after 4K, but stanched the bleeding and has held maybe a three meter gap to Rogers

Conley did rally, but she's cooked now. The gap is up to eight to ten meters

And then there were five

Stud group - Flanagan, Huddle, Sisson, Infeld, Rogers. Flanagan/Infeld train together; so do Huddle/Sisson

15:46 @ 5K, so 3:10, not slowing down much, PR pace for Sisson and Rogers still and in this 85 degree heat

They're lapping runners now. Conley also maybe 50m back. laps have slowed to 76high/77low

Slow K here - 3:12.x for a 19:00

Conley drops out while Erin Finn has kind of been hunting, but way back

Molly Huddle now taking over, or at least on her shoulder. Next three are still Sisson/Infeld/Rogers with no gaps

Everyone in this group has the world standard. Erin Finn is chugging along and trying to catch them...

3:12 to a 22:12 7K split

Huddle and Flanagan co-leading, Rogers maybe losing a half stride here or there as they lap athletes, but once they get clear, she's hanging in

It looks like both BTC women are wearing flats. also looks like Finn lost her shot to catch the group. Rogers again dropping when they lap women and then getting right back on Infeld.

and now Rogers is dropped and there are four. Portland v Providence

25:23 (3:11) at 8K

Huddle now scoots to the rail. Huddle, Flanagan, Sisson, Infeld. I only think Huddle is a lock to make the team. 26:38 w/1600 to go

Huddle the current American record holder, Flanagan the former, Infeld the most recent world medalist. And Sisson is right there. She's never made a senior outdoor team

Huddle tossed in a 73 there!

28:29 (3:05) at 9K, fastest one of the day, none of these four dropped yet and it's gonna be a great last 800

Four really evenly matched women with 700 to go here. media members being DISTRACTINGLY annoying right now. Molly drops the hammer just before 600 and she'll go to London, just a question of the last 2 spots

Now Infeld strikes first but Sisson and Shalane cover it

30:14 for Huddle 30:17 others at the bell

Shalane is dropped it'll be Molly and the Emilys in London

Women's 1500
9:05 Pacific
Three heats, top 3 + 3 straight to final

Auto qualifiers (top three per heat):
4:09.11Q Kate Grace
4:09.65Q Alexa Efraimson
4:09.84Q Emily Lipari

4:11.96Q Jenny Simpson
4:12.52Q Sara Vaughn
4:13.48Q Katie Rainsberger

4:11.23Q Shannon Rowbury
4:11.24Q Nikki Hiltz
4:11.39Q Lauren Johnson

Fastest losers (next three):
4:10.04 Amanda Eccleston
4:11.96 Shannon Osika
4:13.33 Eleanor Fulton

Heat three up. three favorites here are probably Rowbury, Lauren Johnson, Shannon Osika. Kaela Edwards wearing adidas here

Johnson leading at 2:21, by far the slowest, almost certainly no times will come out of this one

I might be wrong. 3:10 at the bell. Johnson and Rowbury, then Osika and Eleanor Fulton. Nikki Hiltz catching them. then a huge gap

Turbo jets for Hiltz who goes from fifth to third in the last 50 meters and grabs an auto spot. I think Osika and Fulton got the time spots

***
Protests up. Steph Schappert dropped out with <300 to go and nelson got tripped late

Jenny on the track here. Sara Vaughn ran the world standard a few weeks back

Jenny, Vaughn, Rainsberger, Karisa Nelson leading early but bunched up

2:18 @ 800

bunched but still Jenny, Vaughn, Steph Schappert, Rainsberger on the outside

Nelson now starts to move up. good for Nelson and Rainsberger that they got room. Heather Kampf who missed most of outdoor with a bad injury is running aggressively in 5th

Jenny, Vaugh, Rainsberger, Nelson right there, nelson stumbles hard maybe tripped

Simpson, Vaughn, Rainsberger get the autos, weird ending for Nelson as it looks like she got flat-tired

***
Heat one on the track. Grace leading, Gabe Grunewald two meters off the back but hanging in, everyone else there.

Efraimson and Eccleston hanging on hard to Grace

2:17 @ 800

Grace, Efraimson, Eccleston well clear, Emily Lipari and Angel Piccirillo chasing

Lipari SNIPES Amanda Eccleston at the line. Gabe fights home in like 4:30

Every runner on the track is circling and hugging Grunewald right now. it's the second time she's been at the center of a moment like this after women walked off the track holding hands to protest her DQ @ US indoors a few years ago.

Men's 1500
8:44 Pacific
Three heats, top 3 + 3 straight to final

There were several flags in the first and last heat and we'll keep you posted.

Auto qualifiers (top three per heat):
3:42.95Q Ben Blankenship
3:43.06Q Craig Engels
3:43.18Q Josh Thompson

3:42.01Q Cristian Soratos
3:42.25Q Robby Andrews
3:42.60Q Jordan McNamara

3:40.76Q Sam Prakel
3:40.78Q Johnny Gregorek
3:40.79Q Matt Centrowitz

Fastest losers (next three):
3:40.94 Clayton Murphy
3:40.95 David Ribich
3:41.12 Drew Hunter

Notable eliminations:
3:43.80 Kyle Merber
3:45.34 Izaic Yorks
3:47.44 Leo Manzano
3:41.40 Andrew Wheating
3:41.42 Mac Fleet

Centro, Murphy, Wheating, Gregorek in this one.

Centro's dyed hair...WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Wheating, Centro, Gregorek out through 400 in 56, all the times will come from this if they even remotely keep it up

1:59 at 800, gathering a little, now Centro (who I keep misidentifying now that he's blonde) getting clear up front. everyone there.

Big move on the backstretch by Gregorek

Geoghegan right there. Clayton leaving it late

WOW Murphy gonna have to advance on time but i think he'll make it

***

No easy heats with only three auto qualifiers per, but this is the easiest of the three. Andrews and Manzano the guys to watch.

46 @ 300. they know that if guys 4-6 run under 3:43, they're the leaders in the clubhouse. but with one more heat to go there's not a ton of a point to pushing.

Casey and Manzacno leading but everyon there. Blake Haney on the rail and former steeplechaser Cory Leslie on the outside. 2:05 @ 800

Soratos starts hammering with 500 to go. That strings it out. 58 lap to lap and 3:01 @ 1200, that lap to lap 56

Leo is out

Soratos, Andrews, JMac get the three autos

***
Interesting that they took 37 dudes here.

Winn and Kidder leading through the bell in 60. everyone together. Engels wearing an Ole Miss kit, Henry Wynne wearing Brooks Beasts, Josh Thompson in BOWERMAN! 2:03 @ 800

Randon falls. Kidder and Blankenship leading. VERY physical

Merber puts a hand on Kidder and gets around

Autos: Blankenship, Engels, then Thompson or Domanic, Merber well back

Women's steeplechase, semis
8:13 Pacific
Two heats, top 5 + 4 to final

Auto qualifiers (top five per heat):
9:38.68Q Emma Coburn
9:40.63Q Colleen Quigley
9:41.13Q Megan Rolland
9:45.79Q Alex Wilson
9:48.65Q Sarah Pease
9:47.75Q Courtney Frerichs
9:48.16Q Marisa Howard
9:48.45Q Mel Lawrence
9:48.70Q Stephanie Garcia
9:48.70Q Katie Landwehr

Fastest losers (next four):
9:49.01 Jess Kamilos
9:49.82 Jamie Cheever
9:52.89 Emily Oren
9:57.08 Hope Schmelzle

Heat 2 up. Steph Garcia and Courtney Frerichs the contenders to watch here. IMO, there is a huge gap between Coburn, Garcia, Quigley, Frerichs, and everyone else.

3:20 or so, 10:00 pace at the 1K. Everyone together in heat 2. Frerichs and Garcia leading but not pushing.

Slightly stringing out. Frerichs, Garcia, Howard, then five chasing.

It's actually bunching back up. Marisa Howard only a meter or so behind the two leaders, Mel Lawrence in a good spot in fourth, then Jess Kamilos solo in fifth.

Jamie Cheever chasing.

Full belly flop for Steph Garcia and she gets RIGHT back in it with no signs of pain. Frerichs, her, Lawrence, Howard will definitely qualify. Kamilos running strong in fifth.

Garcia walked over the next barrier! Still good.

But then barely got over the last hurdle and fell back to fifth. Weird last 600 for her.

Frerichs, Howard, Lawrence, Garcia, Landwehr get the auto spots. Back to you on time in a sec.

***

Heat one on the track now. There is a huge gap between the best steeplechasers and the rest of the country, so the best five or six women should be able to coast through without showing what they've got. The Olympians last year were Emma Coburn, Courtney Frerichs, and Colleen Quigley, though Quigley has only raced once this year.

Megan Rolland, Emma Coburn, Colleen Quigley, Alex Wilson, and Tori Gerlach have already gotten a jump on the rest of the field.

Rolland, Coburn, and Quigley are crushing the field with two laps to go. They'll advance. Then it's Wilson, Gerlach, and a few chasers. The 24-year-old Wilson didn't steeple in college at Northern Iowa, but ran 9:50 last year and 9:40 this year. Coburn now dropping everyone else, she's 8:20 or so at the bell. Rolland and Quigley way up on the rest.

Wilson and Alex Pease have dropped the rest of the field for the autos. They'll be the five and then we'll check times. Coburn jogs it in in 9:38, Rolland and Quigley run 9:40, Wilson fourth, Pease fifth, Emily Oren 9:52, Tori Gerlach 9:58

Men's 400, first round

All of the major names made it except for Verburg, who was third at last year's Olympic Trials and made it the semis in Rio.

Carly Muscaro out of DII makes it to the semis.
Kopp, in heat 2, ran the 800 at NCAAs.
Okolo smokes everyone in heat 2

Kendell Ellis beats Phyllis Francis and Natasha Hastings; all three plus Dunmore advance

Men's 100, first round
6:35 PM Pacific
Five heats, top 2 + next 6 times

Auto qualifiers (two per heat to semis):
9.93Q Christian Coleman
9.97Q Isiah Young
10.01Q Jaylen Bacon
10.02Q Christopher Belcher
10.03Q Jeff Demps
10.02Q Ronnie Baker
10.00Q Justin Gatlin
10.00Q Mike Rodgers
10.19Q Kyree King
10.22Q Dentarius Locke

Time qualifiers so far (next six times)
10.03 Jarrion Lawson
10.05 Beejay Lee
10.11 Cameron Burrell
10.13 Sean McLean
10.14 Remontay McClain
10.16 Marqueze Washington

Notable eliminations:
10.17 Tyson Gay
10.22 Trayvon Bromell

Christian Coleman is wearing a Tennessee kit.

False start in heat one! Collegian Tony Brown of Alabama gets the red card.

Gay is listed as unattached, but he is wearing the full Nike kit. LeShon Collins is running for Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell's new Perfect Method group.

Coleman runs 9.93 with no wind in the first round and jogging the last ten meters. Final is gonna be great.

Very interested in how Gatlin in this heat and Trayvon Bromell in the next heat look. Gay is the last man in right now.

No DQ despite the gun last heat. Gatlin going for it again here.
He looked great!

Trayvon limping after and I don't think he made it.

Coleman is clearly the best, but these semis and final will be fascinating. Lotta guys who can dream of those next two spots.

Women's 100, first round
6:10 PM Pacific
Four heats

Auto qualifiers (three per heat to semis):
10.99Q Barbara Pierre
11.03Q Kimberlyn Duncan
11.05Q Jenna Prandini
10.90Q Tori Bowie
11.01Q Aaliyah Brown
11.16Q Ashley Henderson
11.01Q Deajah Stevens
11.04Q English Gardner
11.06Q Ariana Washington
10.98Q Morolake Akinosun
11.03Q Allyson Felix
11.05Q Aleia Hobbs

Time qualifiers (four fastest losers):
11.07 Tianna Bartoletta
11.113 Hannah Cunliffe
11.120 Destiny Carter (both Cunliffe and Carter ran 11.12)
11.17 Deanna Hill

Notable eliminations:
Mikiah Brisco (NCAA champ)
Kaylin Whitney

Back on the track here. Bartoletta made the Olympic team in the 100 last year; Prandini made it in the 200. Let's see what they've got here.

Wind has been legal so far.

After a meltdown at regionals and nationals, Stevens, Washington, and Cunliffe go 1-3-4 in their heat and will probably advance to the semis.

Felix running just the 100 as she has a bye to worlds in the 400.

Women's 800, first round
5:25 PM Pacific

Auto qualifiers (three per heat to semis):
2:02.31Q Brenda Martinez
2:02.82Q Shea Collinsworth
2:02.85Q Dana Mecke
2:03.28Q Charlene Lipsey
2:03.47Q Hannah Fields
2:03.61Q Emily Richards
2:03.01Q Raevyn Rogers
2:03.02Q Sammy Watson
2:03.20Q Chrishuna Williams
2:02.84Q Ajee' Wilson
2:03.16Q Laura Roesler
2:03.45Q Ce'Aira Brown

Time qualifiers (four fastest losers):
2:02.89 Kendra Chambers
2:03.27 Hanna Green
2:03.62 Cecilia Barowski
2:04.20 Baylee Mires

Top three per heat plus four times qualify. While a bunch of studs have retired, the depth in American women's 800 meter running makes every round tough.

Pregnant Alysia Montano is jogging. 33 at 200 meters.

Brenda Martinez looking ready to dominate this one with Kendra Chambers in a good spot. Alysia ran 2:21 and made some strong statements after, we'll have a post up soon.

Heat 2: DIII runner Emily Richards (who ran 2:00, easily the best DIII mark ever) and former NAIA runner Hannah Fields join Charlene Lipsey as auto qualifiers here.

Mildly surprised that Raevyn is wearing and Oregon kit here and hasn't turned pro yet. Sammy Watson has the new Nike kit on but who knows.

Sammy Watson just beat the NCAA runner-up and a 2016 Olympian for that auto spot. She is good.

Feels like everyone is is supposed to advance has so far. Out of this heat, that's Ajee' Wilson and Laura Roesler. We'll see.
Ajee' showing no staleness from missing the spring due to a tainted beef issue.

Men's 800, first round
5:00 PM Pacific

Top two from each heat and next six auto qualifiers advance to the semis. This is where Duane Solomon and Donavan Brazier went out at the Olympic Trials; this could be the last race of Nick Symmonds's career. We'll keep you posted on the qualifiers as the heats move along.

Auto qualifiers (two per heat to semis):
1:46.76Q Jesse Garn
1:46.87Q Ryan Manahan
1:48.09Q Isaiah Harris
1:48.35Q Shaq Walker
1:47.88Q Clayton Murphy
1:48.23Q Joe White
1:47.24Q Edose Ibadin
1:47.64Q Drew Windle
1:46.55Q Erik Sowinski
1:46.72Q Ryan Martin

Time qualifiers (six fastest losers):
1:46.92 Charles Jock
1:46.97 Donavan Brazier
1:47.11 Drew Piazza
1:47.38 Abraham Alvarado
1:47.73 Isaiah Jewett
1:47.95 Eliud Rutto

Notable eliminations:
Cas Loxsom
Nick Symmonds

First heat: training partners Devin Dixon and Donavan Brazier, a couple collegians, and Jesse Garn and Chris Giesting of NJ*NY.
Isaiah Jewett takes it through a lap in 52.97. Brazier and Dixon eating him up on the backstretch but Jewett looks good!

BRAZIER MIGHT'VE GOTTEN THIRD!!!!

Cannot believe Brazier let Manahan do that to him at the line. Second heat up now, Cas and Shaq leading.

Walker and Harris crush everyone in heat 2 as a blanket finish knocks out Cas.

Clayton Murphy obviously the guy to watch here in heat 3. Then the second auto spot is wide open. Very crowded at the bell, 52.3. Murphy likely won't make the same mistake Brazier did and leave it to the line. Murphy and Joe White got through.

Heat four: this could be the last time we see Nick Symmonds. Also the first time we're seeing Eliud Rutto compete for a spot on a U.S. team.

Nothing will be funnier in this sport than the first 100 meters of a Symmonds race.
Dinkins trains with Robby Andrews and Jason Vigilante in New Jersey.

Windle left that late but got it done. Ibadin and Windle auto, Rutto should time Q, and that's a wrap on Symmonds.

Sowinski and Ryan Martin get the autos, Jock will move on on time, and so will at least one or two others here.
