Keturah Orji Explains Why She's Missing The World Championships
Georgia's Keturah Orji, the fourth place finisher at the Rio Olympic Games triple jump, has withdrawn from the World Championships due to injury.
U.S. triple jump champion Keturah Orji will not compete at the IAAF World Championships due to a lingering injury sustained at the USATF Championships in Sacramento five weeks ago. The 21-year-old took to Twitter last night to explain her absence from the Team USA roster released yesterday.
Orji was to be the only American female triple jump athlete competing in London, as no one else had achieved the world standard of 14.10m. The rising senior at the University of Georgia was a potential medal hope after placing fourth at the Olympic Games last summer in Rio.
In a direct message on Twitter, Orji said that she experienced pain and swelling in her upper calf.
"I probably hurt it during competition but didn't feel until after," she wrote.
She treated the pain with massages, icing and rehab exercises, but made the decision to withdraw from the competition a week ago.
"Part of the sport."
Orji is a five-time NCAA champion, as well as the American record holder in the indoor and outdoor triple jump. She set the latter mark of 14.71m at the Rio Olympic Games.
Keturah Orji reacts to winning the triple jump and placing second in the long jump to her teammate, Kate Hall, at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships:
