United States Women Dominate The World In 4x400m Relay
The Team USA women destroy the competition in the 4x400m relay final at the IAAF World Championships.
The United States women won the 4x400m relay at the 2017 IAAF World Championships by six seconds over the field, clocking a world-leading mark of 3:19.02 to distance runners-up Great Britain, who managed 3:25.00 for silver today.
Team USA's biggest competition entering the event was Jamaica, which had combined to run 3:23 in the qualifying round, just two seconds slower than the Americans. The rivalry quickly came to a halt, however, when Jamaica's second leg in Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby seemingly goes down with injury on the homestretch about 50 meters before she is set to hand off the baton.
The United States' second leg, 400m bronze medalist Allyson Felix, blazed by unfazed to the fastest split of the day which we unofficially clocked at 48.20. (The IAAF live blog claims she ran 48.7). From there, the U.S. raced and won unchallenged.
Felix, the most decorated athlete in IAAF World Championships history, has now won 16 medals at various editions of this event. Her gold medal tally is now 11, which ties Usain Bolt.
