2017 FloXC Countdown: #18 Wisconsin Women
The University of Wisconsin women rank No. 18 on the 2017 FloXC Pre-Season Rankings.
Follow our 2017 FloXC Countdown, where we rank the pre-season top 25 cross country teams and individuals heading into the NCAA season which will be LIVE on FloTrack. The No. 18 women's spot goes to Wisconsin, and here's why:
SR Sarah Disanza (9:16 3K; 15:20 5K; 7th at '17 NCAA Outdoor 5K; 54th at '16 NCAA XC)
SO Alicia Monson (9:20 3K; 16:04 5K; 96th at '16 NCAA XC; 5th at '17 Great Edinburgh)
JR Shaelyn Sorensen (9:41 3K; 16:21 5K; 34:42 10K; 131st at '16 NCAA XC)
SO Amy Davis (9:31 3K; 16:03 5K; 34:16 10K; 160th at '16 NCAA XC)
SO Emma Langer (4:55 Mile; 205th at '16 NCAA XC)
Taylor Nicholson via Avon, IN (2:14 800; 4:49 1600; 10:49 3200)
The University of Wisconsin surprised the cross country community last year with a 14th-place finish in Terre Haute after spending much of the season unranked. Now the Badgers can't escape being on the radar so easily. They return four of their five scorers from 2016, including a rejuvenated Sarah Disanza, who was the NCAA XC individual runner-up in 2014.
After battling injuries through the 2015-2016 season, Disanza entered the 2016 cross country campaign with hardly any mileage on her legs and managed to lead the squad with a 54th-place finish at NCAAs in just her third race of the year. She showed traces of her old form by the outdoor track season in earning All-American honors with a seventh-place15:48 5K performance in Eugene. Now a senior, Disanza could prove to be an individual title contender if truly back in business.
Wisconsin natives Alicia Monson and Amy Davis lead a strong supporting cast. As a true freshman last year, Monson broke into the top 100 at NCAAs with a 96th-place run as the Badgers' second woman after leading the team at the Great Lakes Region with an 11th-place run. She later represented Team USA with a fifth-place performance at the Great Edinburgh Run. Davis was the Badgers' top runner at Big Tens in 16th place. Both women earned All-Big Ten honors on the track and ran under 16:05 for 5K this spring.
The Baders' only loss from the top five is Michelle Lee, who ran No. 3 for the Badgers at NCAAs in 127th place.
