Dennis Kimetto's Way-Too-Early Prediction For The 2018 Berlin Marathon
Dennis Kimetto's Way-Too-Early Prediction For The 2018 Berlin Marathon
Dennis Kimetto says he will return to the Berlin Marathon in 2018 to break his own world record after Eliud Kipchoge's failed attempt this year.
After watching Eliud Kipchoge gut out a 2:03:32 Berlin Marathon win this Sunday on his television screen, Dennis Kimetto let out a sigh of relief. His 2:02:57 world record was safe -- at least until the 2018 Berlin Marathon, where he told Kenyan newspaper Nation Sport today that he plans to lower the world standard again himself.
"I was just at home watching the race and after seeing the foggy conditions, I knew it will be hard to lower that time. A record needs perfect conditions," he said. "It has been hard to break the world record I set in 2014 and I think it's . . . high time I go back there and lower the time."
The 33-year-old Kenyan has been plagued by injury since his world record run three years ago. His last marathon was a 2:11, ninth-place run at the 2016 London Marathon. However, he is set for next weekend's Chicago Marathon against defending champion Abel Kirui as well as Stephen Sambu, Zersanay Tadese, and American Galen Rupp, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist.
