Spearmon suspended after positive test

Three-time national champion Wallace Spearmon has been suspended for three months by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for the corticosteroid Methylprednisolone. Track and Field News reported the positive test findings after a string of odd tweets by Spearmon in the last few weeks.

"I was not trying to cheat, I made a mistake,” Spearmon told Track and Field News

The positive sample came from a test at the Edmonton International Classic on July 6. Spearmon finished 3rd in 20.42 for 200-meters.

Spearmon’s suspension started on Aug. 27 and will end in November. The injection was "administered by his physician in a medical setting."

Spearmon is coming off a summer with 13 races over the 200-meter distance. His season’s best performance came at the 2014 adidas Grand Prix running 20.19 seconds.  He equaled that mark as the runner-up at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In his career, Spearmon won three national titles. He medaled for the United States at the IAAF World Championships in 2005 (200m, silver), 2007 (200m, bronze; 4x100, gold) and 2009 (200m, bronze). Spearmon finished third at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, but was later disqualified for stepping out of his lane.
