Manteo Mitchell signs with Under Armour
Under Armour has signed its first sprinter as they now officially sponsor Olympic silver medalist Manteo Mitchell. The new deal takes him through the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro. Mitchell was previously sponsored by Nike.
“I am extremely honored and blessed to be an athlete with the Under Amour brand,” Mitchell told Flotrack. “It's just a perfect fit. They understand my will and determination to be the best at what I do. We all know success does not come overnight but with hard work and a support team, the sky is the limit. Under Armour is now that new support structure. I have set my goals for the coming year pretty high.”
Mitchell won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London when the American 4x400-meter relay team placed second in the final. In the heats, Mitchell ran the first leg of the relay and clocked a split of 46.1 seconds. He later revealed that he ran the final 200-meters with a broken left fibula.
Mitchell holds a personal best of 44.96 for 400-meters from the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. He also ran 20.47 for 200-meters that same year. This past season, Mitchell finished fifth at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a season’s best of 45.09. He split 22.53 and 22.56 running in lane one of that race.
Under Armour recently ventured into sponsoring road runners with the signing of nick Arciniaga. The Baltimore-based apparel company also sponsors 400-meter runner Natasha Hastings, who has a part of the brand since 2012.
Mitchell said Under Armour is currently working on spikes that are customized for him and a version of them will be released in Spring 2016.
