Bowerman Throwback 2012: Levins & Duncan

Mileage junkie Cam Levins and sprinter Kimberlyn Duncan were the 2012 Bowerman Award winners. Levins of Southern Utah swept the 5k/10k at the NCAA Outdoor meet, with his 28:07.14 10k being the fastest at the meet since 1984. Duncan of LSU won NCAA titles in the 200m in both indoors and outdoors in 2012, the second consecutive year she had accomplished that feat. Her 22.19 from the NCAA Outdoor Championships remains the second fastest in collegiate history.

Cam Levins, Southern Utah

Levins burst on to national scene with his fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA XC Championships, and kept rolling during the indoor season, placing third in the 3k and fourth in the 5k at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

The Canadian caught fire during his outdoor campaign, running the fastest NCAA 5k of 2012 at Mt. SAC with his 13:18.47. In that race, Levins beat reigning cross country champion Lawi Lalang, and recorded the 5th fastest time in NCAA history. Two months later at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Levins swept the 5k/10k using his lethal kick to outdistance the likes of Chris Derrick and Stephen Sambu. Levins covered the final lap of the 5k in 54.28 seconds.

Levins signed with Nike immediately after his NCAA career ended, and joined the Nike Oregon Project shortly thereafter. The Canadian earned his first international medal last summer at the Commonwealth Games, placing third in the 10,000 meters.

Kimberlyn Duncan, LSU

Duncan of LSU was unbeatable in the 200 meters over the last two years of her collegiate career, becoming the first woman in NCAA history to win titles indoor and outdoor in consecutive years. While her speciality was the 200 meters, Duncan was also a star over 100 meters, finishing runner-up in the event at NCAA outdoors. Her time of 22.19 in the 200m at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships is the second fastest in NCAA history.

Duncan ended her collegiate career in 2013 with her third straight NCAA Outdoor 200m title. Later that season, Duncan was the USA outdoor champion in the 200 meters, running a new personal best of 21.80.
