Beer Mile World ChampionshipsThe first ever Beer Mile World Championships were held in Austin, Texas on December 3rd. With the motto of “Chug. Run. Repeat.”, two elite fields of men and women took to the Circuit of the Americas Formula One track with the goal of breaking a world record.
The elite women’s race saw Elizabeth Herndon of Fort Wayne, Indiana smash the previous world record by nearly 11 seconds, running 6:17.76 and earning a cool $5k check. Herndon’s time beat her old personal best by 31 seconds.
The men’s elite field had its eyes set on James Nielsen’s 4:57 world record, but would have to settle for 5:00.23, run by the Canadian Corey Gallagher. The mailman from Manitoba set a new personal best by throwing down a stunning 61 last lap, outdistancing New Yorker Michael Cunningham who would place second in 5:07.95. Gallagher’s chugging ability proved to be too much for his competitors, as he was able to finish his final Bud Platinum in just seven seconds.
