Providence's Sisson Breaks 5,000m NCAA Record

Providence senior Emily Sisson made history on Saturday night at the Big East Championships in New York City.

The All-American set a new collegiate record in the 5,000m of 15:12.22 at the Armory, breaking former Providence Friar Kim Smith’s old mark of 15:14.18 that had stood since 2004. Sisson smashed her previous PB of 15:21.84, set in December.

The Chesterfield, Mo. product’s time is all the more impressive considering that she won by 1:08, as teammate Lauren Mullins was second in 16:20. Conference distance races tend to be tactical as the focus is generally just to win or score points for the team, but clearly Sisson had bigger plans tonight in NYC.

With Wisconsin’s Sarah Disanza struggling since beating Sisson in the 5,000m in December, Sisson will enter NCAAs in two weeks as the favorite to take home her first title. Based on tonight’s performance, expect her to make the pace hot from the gun.
