Mary Cain Takes Leave From Oregon Project
According to Ken Goe of The Oregonian, Mary Cain has taken a leave from the Nike Oregon Project and returned to her home in Bronxville, NY. Cain remains a member of the group, but is training in New York for the time being.
Cain’s poor performances in the early part of 2015 are suggested as the primary reason for her “break” from the Oregon Project. The 19-year-old has struggled throughout her 2015 season, looking nothing like the Mary Cain of 2013 who set U.S. high school records in the 800m (1:59.51), 1500m (4:04.62), and 5,000m (15:45.46). Cain also qualified for the World Championships final in the 1500m that same year, and was the 2014 World junior champion in the 3,000m last July in Eugene.
Most recently, Cain finished 11th in her heat and 25th overall in the 1500m at the Hoka One One Middle Distance Classic, running 4:16.48.
Goe said that Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar did not want to discuss the matter at length.
Cain was not present while Goe was at NOP's altitude camp last week in Provo, Utah.
