Analysis:
The Washington women return in 2015 with some fighting power. Senior Maddie Meyers will be the hands-down leader, clocking 4:14 and 15:40 on the track. Meyers took home All American honors after her 27th place finish in Terre Haute last year, so her maturity and experience will be key to the Huskies’ success this fall.
Katie Knight, who redshirted the 2014 cross country season, returns to the pack in 2015. Knight nearly reached NCAA’s this past spring in the 5000m, and with 4:22 and 15:58 speed, she can be the solid #2 that the Dawgs need this year. Sophomore Anna Maxwell, senior Eleanor Fulton, and junior Kaylee Flanagan have the potential to round out the top 5, but consistency will be a key factor this fall. In 2014, the UW ladies had a fantastic showing at the West regional meet, placing 3 in the top 25 and 5 in the top 50. Just over a week later in Terre Haute, only Meyers was able to crack into the top 30, with runners 3-5 over 100 places back. If they had replicated what they did at Stanford a week earlier, the Huskies would have been a top 10 team.
UW also acquired some talent from across the border in Charlotte Prouse. The 2015 Pan am steeplechase champion can possibly shake things up in the Huskies’ top 5, but we’re not sure what Coach Metcalf’s plan are for young Prouse. She has gained some fantastic momentum going into this cross country season, and with a hard hit to the team mid-season such as sickness or injury, Metcalf may call on Prouse to help things out. But looking as things are heading into cross country season, there is not reason why this team can’t only make it to Louisville, but perform very well and at a high level.
