The Week Ahead- (May 26-Jun1)

The summer has officially started and that means two things: first NCAA Track and Field Championships are right around the corner and second the Pro track season is under way. This weekend will be full of action as NCAA DI Regions, the Reebok Grand Prix, and the DKB-ISTAF (IAAF Golden League) meets will be raced.

This weekend our nation's top collegiate teams will compete in their respective regions with hopes of making it to the big show. For those that don't know there are four regions, which are comprised of the East Region (Florida State),MidEast Region… more »

ING Ottawa Marathon - Everyone Loves a Winner Baby!

The ING Ottawa Marathon organizing committee made a stand-up effort to bring in a crop of athletes very capable of taking down course records, especially in the 10k and the Marathon. With good prize money and Athletics Canada naming the date of Sunday May 25th as the final opportunity for Canadian men and women marathoners to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, the race was stacked with an elite field of Canadians and internationals. Riding in the second media van, armed with a Nikon D70 and a love for all things competitive, especially marathon running, I enjoyed observing the marathon unfold… more »

DII National Championship review

A rare May storm welcomed in the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships on May 22 in Walnut, CA. The storm caused a two plus hour delay for many events, and resulted in the rescheduling of the hammer throw, which had to be contested the next day. With this delay, the 10,000 meters did not began until 10:50 pm for the women, and 11:30 pm for the men. Abilene Christian’s Winrose Karunde won the women’s 10,000 meters in a time of 35:29.68, creating a five second gap between her and her next competitor, Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach (35:35.02), in… more »

This upcoming weekend, May 22-24, will end the 2008 DII outdoor season. There have been many memorable performances this season, which will culminate this weekend at the DII Outdoor Nationals held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, CA and hosted by Cal Poly Pomona. Virginia Tech's Tasmin Fanning recently ran a huge PR at the Oregon Twilight Meet with a 15:47 in the 5k. She also got to meet presidential hopeful, Barrack Obama.

How is your training going right now?

Training is going great. We’re going to start working some more specific speed and paces working up to the end of the season, while keeping up on volume because we’re extending the season a bit.

Since I have become wholly interested in the work of Arthur Lydiard, I stop in my tracks and take the time to read anything that happens to have the Lydiard name attached to it. Whether discussions develop in a thread about the Lydiard method on a running forum or talking directly to people who knew or were influenced by the man, reading online documents, books and magazines, one is able to educate themselves on the Lydiard method. The information is available. It is protected and preserved by the Lydiard Foundation, but very available, like Arthur was. Interpretation and applicaton however,… more »

ING Ottawa Marathon - Who Will Qualify for the Beijing Olympics?

Anticipation is mounting leading up to the ING Ottawa Marathon as it looms large on the calendar of any Canadian marathon runner hoping to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. Athletics Canada (AC) and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) set the precarious date of Sunday, May 25th 2008 for Canadian men and women to achieve the necessary marathon Olympic qualification standards. ING Ottawa Marathon happens to take place on this drop dead date. Therefore Ottawa becomes the de facto, Canadian Olympic, Marathon Trials. So far there are no Canadians to hit the required marathon standards, which are set a level higher… more »

The Week Ahead- (May 5-11)

This Olympic year has been chock full of too many amazing accomplishments to mention them all right now. However, credit needs to be given to this past weekend's Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational where Scott Bauhs got the Olympic "A" standard in the 10k, Sally Kipyego ran an amazing 31:25.45 10k collegiate record, and Shalane Flanagan proved she is on top by winning the Kim McDonald 10k in an American record time of 30:34.49. That just so happened to be the first time that Shalane has ever run the 10k and breaking the women's AR by 17 seconds, I do believe… more »

Zach Whitmarsh

Zach Whitmarsh toils on the Jack Wallace Memorial, Oak Bay High School track. Marley, his dog canters back and forth from the infield to the start area and back, taking splits. "What breed mix is Marley?" Zach writes: "Marley is a pound dog. As far as we can tell he is a Shepherd-Collie cross. There may also be a bit of Burmese in him, he's a big-pawed dawg and he'd probably weigh another 20 pounds if he didn't get in the 50 miles per-week he's gotten used to." Meanwhile some local, longer distance ectomorphs gut out a low-key invitational race,… more »
