Nobuya 'Nobby' Hashizume - On the legend and legacy of Arthur Lydiard.
July 25, 2008
The legend and the legacy of Arthur Lydiard is alive and well. Perhaps the method he developed over a 50 year period is more popular today than when he coached Olympians directly or headed various national governing bodies of sport throughout the world.
From New Zealand’s greatest athlete ever, Olympic Gold medalist and world record holder, Dr. Peter Snell to Finland’s legendary Lasse Viren, Lydiard’s influence was widespread and the success of it was undeniable.
Since his passing in 2004, while on tour in the US, 4 time Olympian Lorraine Moller and Nobuya ‘Nobby’ Hashizume, one of the most knowledgeable… more »

Quick Hits Day 10Hasay Out, But Finishes Strong | What a week for Jordan Hasay the prep phenom out of Mission College Prep in San Luis Obispo. Jordan was not in the original field for the Womens 1500m in any of the first three heats until another athlete pulled out. When Nicole Teter scratched, after placing 3rd in the Womens 800m, a spot opened up for Hasay. A little nervous but not fearful of the professional talent all around her, Hasay's light shined strong throughout the trials. When Hasay entered the mixed area after her first race, her comments made… more »

July 5, 2008
Sprinter Tyson Gay, 12 steps into his 200m quarterfinals race, crashed into the track as he began his turn down the home stretch. Looking to be stunned and in pain, Gay sat up on the track motioning from side to side with what apeared to be a left-hamstring or left-knee injury. No official word has hit the wire yet inside the media tent. Based off of the live-video feed, Gay was carried onto a rolling wheelchair and escorted from the track after almost flipping head over heels in lane 7. The crowd erupted in a collective gasp when Gay stumbled… more »
Saturday Preview - Men's Steeple Final
July 5, 2008
Men's Steeple
Fourteen athletes advanced to this
afternoon's men's steeplechase final. All of the favorites advanced, although
not without incident. The top four finishers in each heat advance
automatically, while the next six fastest between the two heats also go on.
Steve Slattery, who came in with the top qualifying time (8:15.69) left things
to chance in a loaded first field. He finished fifth and had to wait for the
second heat before knowing whether he was in the final. Brian Olinger, the
second-fastest entry (8:19.29) barely advanced as well. He was the 14th of 14
qualifiers. He just… more »

Women's 5,000m Final
Shalane
Flanagan and Kara Goucher have become two of the stars of these trials already.
The two had a much-anticipated dual in the 10,000m already and much has been
made of their decision to double back in the 5,000m. Each woman advanced to the
final relatively easily, but there they face stiffer competition than they did
in the 10,000m. Jenn Rhines and Lauren Fleshman join Flanagan and Goucher as
the only members of the field with the A-standard. Flanagan came in with the
best time (Her 14:44 American Record from last summer). Rhines, Goucher and
Fleshman qualified… more »

wittled the women's 400m entrants down to eight finalists. Ebonie Floyd, Monica
Hargove, Debbie Dunn, Mary Wineberg, Sanya Richards, Natashia Hastings, Dee Dee
Trotter and Monique Henderson all advanced for the chance to earn a spot on the
Olympic team. To qualify for the Olympics (put simply), an athlete must be
among the top-three finishers who posses an Olympic A-standard time. For the
distance races in the US, this procedure has been relatively complicated in
recent years. Though less likely now, a competitor could concievably finish
last and go on… more »
