FloAwards Part 2, 10.23.08

Well, it's about that time again. Here's (a belated) Part 2 to the 2008 FloAwards & Rankings list. For this go around we've added a new number to all those names. They refer to how many 1st place votes an individual or team received from our pundits. There was quite a contrast to our first published preseason list and this second edition we're posting today. Despite many changes a few athletes have firmly planted their name (and picture) on top of the charts.  On the Men's Individual side, I'm sure everyone can now agree that Sam Chelanga is for real. Usain Bolt Breaks 200m World Record!

Usain Bolt dazzled the crowd once again with Dance moves and another World Record. The race was over at 100 meters and all that was still to be determined the home stretch was how fast the Bolt would run. Bolt did not disappoint, he crossed the line and broke Michael Johnson's 12 year record with a 19.30. The rest of the field was scattered over the ground while reggie blasted and Bolt danced. Usain Bolt has now set two World Records and won two gold medals but he still has one medal left to capture when the Jamaicans go head… more »

By Bob Ramsak(c) 2008 TRACK PROFILE Report, all rights reserved (used with permission)BEIJING (18-Aug) -- Continuing one of the most spectacular rises from obscurity that the sport has witnessed in recent years, Kenyan teenager Pamela Jelimo ran away with the Olympic 800m title tonight at Beijing's National Stadium. With the year's five fastest performances and with eight victories in as many races this season, Jelimo was the overwhelming favourite to take the gold, and she hardly disappointed, clocking 1:54.87, her fourth World junior record of the summer. Notably, the 18-year-old claimed the first ever Olympic gold medal for Kenya in an… more »

Play-by-play account of Liu Xiang DNS, Round 1 of the 110H

Liu Xiang left the birds nest this morning in Beijing, amidst a chorus of nothing. The Chinese superstar who was pressured and poised to be a potential gold medal winner for China, if healthy, failed to complete Round 1 of the 110 hurdles out of lane 2.Closed circuit TV followed Xiang's every movement from the warm-up track, to under the grandstands, and then into the starting blocks. Despite appearing to be in pain on the warm-up track, Xiang continued over to the underneath the grandstands to rest and receive his hip numbers for Round 1. When television showed him going… more »

Shalane's Bronze from Mark's seat at the Finish

Mark was lucky enough to be sitting near the finish line as Shalane Flanagan made history.  Here's what he saw.... The day started off with the sun (yes the sun!), blue skys, cool temperatures and doom for the American 10k team. Cool temperature brings a hot pace and no American is close to the world record or the 30 min barrier.  Even though the good weather is a good thing it usually means the Americans drop off after the pace starts to roll, anywhere between 3 and 5k.  But this is not your usual US distance team and last year… more »

Sprinter Tyson Gay, 12 steps into his 200m quarterfinals race, crashed into the track as he began his turn down the home stretch. Looking to be stunned and in pain, Gay sat up on the track motioning from side to side with what apeared to be a left-hamstring or left-knee injury. Based off of the live-video feed, Gay was carried onto a rolling wheelchair and escorted from the track after almost flipping head over heels in lane 7. The crowd erupted in a collective gasp when Gay stumbled… more »

Saturday Preview - Men's Steeple Final

Men's Steeple             Fourteen athletes advanced to this afternoon's men's steeplechase final. All of the favorites advanced, although not without incident. Steve Slattery, who came in with the top qualifying time (8:15.69) left things to chance in a loaded first field. He finished fifth and had to wait for the second heat before knowing whether he was in the final. Brian Olinger, the second-fastest entry (8:19.29) barely advanced as well. He was the 14th of 14 qualifiers. He just… more »

Friday Night Preview - Women's 5k Final, Men's 10k Final

Women's 5,000m Final Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher have become two of the stars of these trials already. The two had a much-anticipated dual in the 10,000m already and much has been made of their decision to double back in the 5,000m. Each woman advanced to the final relatively easily, but there they face stiffer competition than they did in the 10,000m. Jenn Rhines and Lauren Fleshman join Flanagan and Goucher as the only members of the field with the A-standard. Flanagan came in with the best time (Her 14:44 American Record from last summer). Rhines, Goucher and Fleshman qualified… more »
