Lessons learned..

With the spring semester looming, I have had time to look back this past week at my coverage this past season. With any experience you learn some lessons. With my writing, I know I need to watch my grammar and my style could use improvement. I have actually gone to my Professors and have gotten help for my writing. I also learned that results should always be checked at least twice and always have people who can explain rules to you. Another important lesson, I have learned is always have a backup plan for every column. One never knows if an interview will fall thru or if one subject will not be exciting. I still make mistakes but I will try to improve.

I have learned more about Division II running. I learned that Division II runners are hardcore take Dustin Dixon for example running with a broken fibula is hardcore. I learned that they can achieve great achievements such as Nicodemus Naimadu winning four straight National Cross Country titles. I have learned that many Division II runners do not start out as runners but are glad that they end up as runners. Jessica Pixler achieved more after she stopped playing soccer. I learned that the running community is alive and well in Division II. I kept correspondences with several coaches who helped me with the conference and the regional meets and not once did anyone ever deny me an interview when I asked for one. If I needed information of any sort, I had help tracking it down. I learned that Division II might be a smaller compared to Division I but it is just as fascinating. Truly, we are only a smaller part of the greater whole of the running community.

I just hope to keep learning.

Meets this weekend
After a brief holiday layoff, the 2008 NCAA indoor track & field season got back on track with several meets being contested over the weekend but only one that had any Division II teams.

At the Southern Tier Collegiate Open hosted by Cornell University, Mansfield raced against a field consisting of mostly Cornell runners. In the menâ€™s 1000m, Mansfieldâ€™s Chris Cummings ran a 2:32 defeating his two teammates Dave Sanford(2:35) and John Mark Stoltz (2:36). The rest of the events were dominated by Cornell runners.

I will be back with more coverage next weekend, and hopefully an interview if it goes better than this weekâ€™s. If anyone has a current/former Division II runner that they would like to see a piece on, leave me a comment.

#8	Flash1042_x January 9, 2008 at 6:29pm I ran NAIA and it is just as hardcore and competitive within itself as Div II. I also imagine Div III is the same. Don't limit competitive hardcore running fanatics to only Div I and II. reply

#6	Nate Z. January 8, 2008 at 9:26pm Ryan Blood of Lock Haven State University. Took 4th at XC Div-II NCAA's last year, 2nd American, ran 29:30 in that race.
