Vancouver Sun Run (April 20, 2008) - 59,179 participants registered for the 24th annual Vancouver Sun Run, presented by HSBC Canada. The race was run in cool temperatures (start of 3c) with a very light breeze and sunny skies. Kenyan, Festus Langat was first in, with a time of 29:26. Second was Philip Koech also of Kenya. Finishing third and top Canadian male was Ryan Hayden of Surrey, BC with a time of 29:38. The Africans were fading and Hayden closed in, narrowly missing second, this is a reversal of his other 3rd place performance from 2007 where Ryan had faded in the end. Ethiopian Genet Gebregiorgis took first with a time of 33:35 beating Lisa Harvey of Calgary, AB who finished with a time of 33:58. Harvey also claimed the first Canadian female title. Kirsty Smith from Victoria, BC placed third female with her time of 34:12. First masters were Marilyn Arsenault of Victoria, BC who also finished top 5 overall, in 35:14. Steve Boyd of Kingston, Ontario in 31:04 won the men's master's race. The Vancouver Sun Run, is the 2nd largest timed 10K in the world and the 3rd largest timed run of any distance in the world. Nancy Tinari Coquitlam, BC 36:36 Canadian Half Marathon Championships - Montreal, QC (April 20, 2008) - "Catherine the Great" Ndereba, current World Champion and Olympic silver medalist, in her Olympic tune-up race and her brother Samuel, took home the first overall prizes at the 6th Banque Scotia 21k de Montreal, in front of a record field. Catherine was just one second ahead of second place in 1:13:11 while Samuel was well clear in 1:03:45. Meanwhile the husband and wife team of Andrew Smith and Tara Quinn-Smith captured the Canadian Half-Marathon Championships titles with times of 1:05:19 and 1:13:40, respectively. Canadian's Andrew Smith and Matt McInnes, battled windy conditions to finish 1 - 2 in this race's race within a race, as this event also served as the Canadian Half Marathon Championships. The annual event is one of the most popular 10k races in Canada. An interesting race should unfold between past winners, Steve Osadiuk and Jim Finalyson, as well as Ryan Day and David Jackson, each having the potential to nip under 30:00 if the wind cooperates. In the women's event, Cheryl Murphy who came second to Kirsty Smith in the Vancouver Sun Run by 2 seconds will be looking to return the favor. Watch for an epic battle to unravel onto Belleville Street in front of the stately Provincial Legislature and Fairmont Empress Hotel, where 10, 000 people will be cheering in the finishers.
